Chapter Text
The sun begins to pour into the room as Sunny’s eyes open. He looks at his alarm clock and sees the time displayed. 5:30 A.M. He groans before getting up and deciding to start his day regardless of how much he wanted to go back to sleep. After all, it was the big day.
He quickly washes up and puts on a sleek black button up and dress pants to create a clean formal appearance. He makes his way down to the storefront. He checks to see everything is clean, but notices his reflection. He realizes he forgot to put on his eyepatch. Sunny had a rather good glass eye, but preferred not to show his scarring. He cooks himself eggs and bacon, quickly eating the food as opening time was closing in.
6 A.M. finally hits. Sunny unlocks the door and flips the sign to open. He puts a poster on the glass.
GRAND OPENING OF CAFE OMORI!! IF YOU GET BOTH BREAKFAST AND COFFEE, THE BREAKFAST WILL BE HALF OFF!
Sunny sighs, wondering how good of an idea the promotion really was. He looks outside, not seeing many people on the street at all. Sunny knew that he did choose to be near the outskirts of the city. He felt like that decision might make it harder for him to get customers, but even then he still held onto hope.
Hours pass as noon finally hits. Sunny sighs, resigning himself to the fact that he might have a customer-less grand opening. The door opens and a loud voice fills the cafe.
“WAHAHAHA! I HAVE GRACED THIS ESTABLISHMENT! FOR IT IS I!”
Sunny begins to forget to be nice to his customers, as he immediately feels aggravated at the loudness of his first customer.
“QUIET DOWN! You’re in MY cafe, have manners!”
“O-Oh. Sorry.”
The figure walks to the counter, while Sunny has his back turned, fixing up his appearance which had become more disheveled as the day progressed. The moment he turned around he felt a headache begin to form.
“…What’ll you be having?” Sunny curtly asks.
“I, THE MAVERICK! Will have the promo special! One coffee and uh…. an omurice!”
“Any bean preference? Arabica? Robusta?”
Mikhael looks at Sunny closely before his eyes widen. Before Mikhael could speak, Sunny begins to explain more about the beans.
“Some people say Robusta is more chocolatey, but most people consider Arabica the gold standard. There’s a reason that it’s the most produced bean. So what’ll it be?”
“A-Arabica is fine. How much will it be in total?”
“$6 is fine.”
“WOAH! Perfect! I knew it was a good idea coming here!”
Sunny sighs before getting to work with his French press. After making the coffee he quickly and effortlessly whips up one omurice. He gives Mikhael his coffee and omurice before taking out a knife. He slices down the middle of the omelette, before the egg splits open revealing a perfect soft center. Sunny pours the demi-glacé sauce over the egg and sits back down. Mikhael slowly takes off his wig, setting it down on the counter. He doesn’t say a word, instead he begins to slowly eat his food and drink his coffee. Sunny notices that he seems to be savoring every bite.
Huh. Guess he was hungry. Or I make that good of an omurice.
“So. Why did you come here? To this area. Last time I checked, you’d be in Faraway. Faraway isn’t far from here, but you don’t just come to the city for nor reason.”
Mikhael looks up inquisitively.
“I mean… Most people in Faraway go to college around here. This area isn’t too far from the college town. It’s weirder that you’re alone in a cafe, working… Is your boss not here?”
“I am the boss.”
“W-Wow. That’s… pretty damn impressive. Guess you have it all figured it.”
Sunny hums. Not really impressive honestly . My mom and the old man that taught me are the impressive ones.
“So. How’s college? I don’t go. This kinda thing is my dream.”
Mikhael nervously laughs. His face contorts to sadness and anger.
Crap. Did I hit a sore spot?
“…Do you mind if I talk about it? You can give me your opinion and advice too. It’d probably help.”
Sunny sees the look on Mikhael’s face and immediately nods. Sunny always wants to help people if it’s something within his power. Listening is the least he could do to help him.
“Sure. I don’t mind listening and giving my opinion.”
Mikhael smiles and nods gratefully.
“I’ve been doing well enough in my classes. I’m not failing a single one. But I just feel… empty about it. I keep telling myself that I’ll be happy when I’m working, but I think I’m scared. I don’t think I want to go to college, but if I don’t go… What happens? Am I just being overdramatic? You probably think so… especially with how I am.”
“Slow down!” Sunny interrupts, putting a hand up.
“Let me tell you some things. Feeling empty… I get how you feel actually. There’s no right answer I can give you, but I think… you should do what makes you happy. Telling yourself you’ll be happy won’t always work. It usually doesn’t. I would know. Look at what you enjoy. Try things out. You’re not being overdramatic either. Like you said. You’re just scared. You’re fine the way you are too. Remember, you have friends by your side. Aubrey and the others are with you. And… I guess if you want me to support you, I will too.”
Mikhael’s mouth hangs open, as his eyes begin to twitch. Sunny looks at him with concern in his mind. Mikhael covers his face, wiping away what Sunny believed were tears, before laughing loudly.
“HAHAHA! I’m fine!…Thank you, knife boy. Err… knife sir? Knife friend?”
“Don’t call me any of that.”
“Anyways! Try things out, huh. Y-You mind if I work here? I’d be taking your advice then!”
“Mikhael… Why would you want to work here?”
“TIS TO PAY THE FAVOR! Plus I’d get all the ladies if I learned how to make a mean cup of coffee.”
Sunny begins to shake his head causing Mikhael to panic.
“P-Please! I’ll give you my resume! Trust me!”
“I don’t think I will…”
“PLEASE! PRETTY PLEASE!”
Sunny pinches his nose wondering how it all came to this.
“…I literally can’t pay you. This is literally a new business and I’ve had no customers whatsoever.”
“T-THAT MEANS I’M HIRED! HELL YEAH! YOU WON’T REGRET THIS MR. BOSS!”
“Don’t call me that either.”
“Boss-man?”
“Nope.”
“How bout Boss?”
Reminds me too much of Aubrey…
“Nope.”
“Big Man?”
“Why me…”
“I GOT IT! I’ll call you Sensei! It’ll be like those anime!”
“Whatever…”
