Chapter Text
Aizawa Shouta knows a lot of things. He knows coffee is best black, this is why he never buys creamer. He knows the most heinous criminals tend to stay in the shadows, this is why he chose to become an underground hero. Hee knows that sentient quirks are incredibly rare, instances have been recorded in less than five percent of the population.
So how in the world did he end up with 2 students with them in his class, that’s more than twice the recorded percentage. How could he get so lucky or unlucky he should say, the thought of the Problem Child having a previously unknown sentient quirk making his head pound.
But he can't deny its existence after seeing them react the way they did. Shouta feels guilty for causing so much distress in the already stricken kid to force his quirk forward. After seeing Dark Shadow react protectively over an injured Tokoyami numerous times he can understand the quirks needed to protect him from the perceived threat he and All Might stood to their existence.
Aizawa feels sick at the thought of one of his students not only developing a quirk late; don’t think he missed that tid-bit. But also having to deal with said late quirk being sentient and having next to no one to talk to about it has to be incredibly isolating and stressful. From their extended conversation in the staff room Shota was able to see that Midoriya’s mistrust of adults was a far deeper issue than the teenage hubris he had previously thought it was. Aizawa felt like a failure as not only a teacher but also as a hero for not noticing the kids' struggle.
Aizawa resolved to watch his students more closely from now on.

Aizawa walks back towards the dorms after finishing the preliminary changes in Midoriya’s paperwork, and spots the kid heading the same way.
“Hey kid, you want an escort, or maybe a little adult intervention. We all know the hell spawn are going to converge on you the moment you step through those doors.” He says as he jogs up to the boy.
“Yeah you’re probably right, we would appreciate that. If you don't mind, of course, we don’t want you to go out of your way.”
“It’s no problem, I pulled you out in the first place.” He says with a kind smirk. Midoriya tiredly mirrored his expression.
‘Yeah this kid is going to need all the help he can get’ Shouta mused
They silently make the walk to the 1-A dorms.

The class heard the front door open from their various places around the commons area, Bakugou even hanging out in the far corner trying to mask his worry with a mask of indifference. They all anxiously looked towards the sound in hopes of seeing their missing classmate.
The sight of Midoriya being led in by their teacher in one piece, and without the gentle guiding hand they had witnessed earlier, helped them all release the breath they were collectively holding.
“Well it looks like we don’t need to go searching for anyone. Problem Child, would you like me to say anything? The ball is in your court kid, you don't have to say anything if you do not feel comfortable.” Midoriya shifts uncomfortably. Aizawa spots his eyebrows scrunch like he's contemplating something, then he nods frantically. Midoriya mumbles under his breath.
“Okay, okay, we’ll tell them.”
Midoriya steps forward and with a deep studying breath he prepares to tell the class his unintentional secret.
“So you guys probably don't know this, but I was a late bloomer, like SUPER late. We don’t know why. It probably has something to do with the amount of energy it takes to manipulate it or something. Well that's what they were throwing out, I don’t know how they would know but, anyway we’re off course… My quirk showed up on the day of the entrance exam, and the morning after I started to feel this weird energy all over. I had a buzz in the back of my brain for weeks, I thought it was just stress and anxiety from the exam. But one day they just started chatting with me like it was completely normal, and I just went along with it.” Midoriya trailed off, the class watching their classmate ramble.
“Midoriya”
“Right, we got distracted, sorry. Basically my quirk is sentient.”
The class exploded into chaos. No one knew how to react, sure they knew Tokoyami and Dark Shadow, but they never expected to meet another person with a sentient quirk.
“How?” The ever calm Shoji asks his tone devoid of anything other than curiosity. Midoriya looks to the floor like a scolded child.
“Um, we don’t know, they’re probably ancestors or something just hanging out in my brain. But we aren’t crazy, we’re telling the truth, promise.” He wrings his hands nervously.
“We believe you Deku, you don’t have to worry!” Uraraka gets up from the floor to grab his hands, she looks vaguely uncomfortable but supportive like the rest.
“Yeah Midobro, we’re just a little shocked!”
“And if anyone says anything about it we’ll take care of them for you!” Kirishima and Kaminari add from the other side of the room.
Izuku cries for the second time that day, but this time they are tears of relief.
When he next looks at the class they are surprised to see his green eyes shining unnaturally, “We don't have to hide anymore.”
The form of Dark Shadow excitedly emerges with the sound of the layered voices.
“Oh wow! Hi, how are you? We’re so excited to finally meet you!” The sight of Dark Shadow nuzzling Midoriya’s tear tracked face eases the class's uncertainty of the situation.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you.” Midoriya’s mantra echoing through the quiet dorm. They were safe with the class, why were they ever worried in the first place?

Class 1-A loved living in the dorms, they could take care of each other.
