Chapter Text
It was 5 pm on a summer evening in Delmarva when Steven received an email notification on his phone. It was funny, he thought, because Connie was currently out getting the paper mail and the email coming through just then was a hilarious coincidence. He sat down at the kitchen table and opened his phone, and a smile broke out on his face as he realized who it was from.
Although he didn’t live far from Beach City nowadays, he still didn’t get to see his old friends that often- which was why his heart did a flip as he opened the notification, reading the letter from his favorite mailman and acting buddy.
“To: [email protected]
From: [email protected]
Hey Steveeeen! I hope you’re settling into your new apartment okay, Garnet told me all about it! I can’t believe you’re 19 now- it seems like yesterday I was delivering wacky sacks to your house!
Anyway, I have big news! I’m getting married ! Crazy, right? And, as my favorite half-gem and companion/good friend, it would mean a lot to me if you joined me as my best man! I eagerly await your reply and I do hope you can make it- a formal invitation will be making its way to you shortly.
With love,
Jamie”
Steven practically beamed. It had been years since the incident with Garnet leaving Jamie’s heart astray, and the fact that he had finally found true love was wonderful to say the least. Jamie was like an older brother to him, and more so he was a friend, so of course he would go. And as his best man nonetheless!
He began to write his reply.
“From: [email protected]
JAMIE THAT’S AMAZING! Aaaaah I’m so happy for you!! Who’s the lucky lady? Or lad? Is it someone we know? I have so many questions! Of course I’ll be your best man!”
He had only written that much when Connie re-entered their townhouse with a handful of letters and a single package. Steven clambered out of his chair and practically bounced over to his girlfriend.
“CONNIE! Oh my gosh- guess what! I’ve got big news!”
“Huh? What’s up? Are they making a new dogcopter series or something?”
“No, but that would be pretty cool! I just got an email from Jamie- turns out he’s getting married!! And he wants me to be his best man!”
Connie’s face lit up in a bright smile, reminding Steven of how pretty she was.
“WHAT! Oh my gosh, that IS big news! I’m so happy for him!! Speaking of which, that’s probably what this letter is-“
Connie shuffled the letters in her right hand to focus on one in a Manila envelope with a wax seal, addressed from Jamie to them.
“Open it!”
“I’m gonna! Gimme a second!”
Connie set the rest of the mail down on the coffee table and flopped onto the couch, Steven following suit, both excited as could be. Connie carefully broke the seal and unfolded the invitation resting neatly inside, the paper of excellent quality with gold accents and beautiful floral leafy artwork.
“You are cordially invited to the wedding of Jamie Valentina and…”
As Steven read the next half of the sentence, his smile dropped and his heart sank.
“Kevin Lee.”
“WHAT?”
Connie just sat in silence, staring at the invitation with concern in her eyes.
Kevin.
Kevin was without a doubt one of the rudest and most self absorbed people that Steven had ever had the displeasure of knowing. Although the last time they had seen each other at his party he had been relatively nice, but his actions were still motivated by selfishness that left a bad taste in his mouth. He couldn’t imagine someone like him ever being with someone as kind and genuine as Jamie.
“He can’t be- I-It can’t be THAT Kevin, right?”
“Steven, how many Kevins do we know that live in Beach City? It’s gotta be him! ”
“But that’s- he’s so- WHAT?”
“I know… it doesn’t make any sense.”
“Jamie’s the sweetest guy I know, why in the world would he date much less get married to Kevin of all people?! Oh gosh I’ve missed so much since I left Beach City…”
Connie put a hand under her chin.
“Well, you never know! Maybe he’s changed?”
“People like him don’t change. If anything he’s probably using Jamie for something…”
“I thought you said you didn’t care about Kevin anymore?”
Steven shook his head and pumped his fist triumphantly, standing up off the couch.
“I care when it involves one of my friends! Jamie’s got a big and sensitive heart, and if Kevin is taking advantage of that I won’t have it!”
Connie giggled.
“What’re you gonna do, intervene? Hate to break it to you but the wedding is next month…”
“W-well if I’m gonna be his best man, then I get to go a few days earlier to help prepare, right? Plus with you as my plus one, I’m sure we’ll get to the bottom of this!”
Connie stood up and set a hand on his shoulder, a soft smile on her face.
“Alright, we’ll go and see what the deal is for ourselves- and if we DO think that Jamie is making a mistake, then we’ll talk to him about it! How’s that sound?”
“Alright…”
A few more minutes passed, and Steven realized he needed to revise his email.
“JAMIE THAT’S AMAZING! I’m so happy for you!! Of course I’ll be your best man! We just got the invitation actually- can you tell me more about your fiancé?”
There. Clear, concise, not too pushy or overly-concerned.
He was going to get to the bottom of this one way or another. Hopefully this wedding wouldn’t be a total disaster.

Excellent! I’ll see you soon then!
As for my fiancé, I think you already know him! He says he’s met you and Connie in the past- small world, right? He’s a really great guy!
I can’t wait for you guys to meet again!
Yours,
Jamie”
