Summary:

The other idea I had for this prompt.

Notes:

Okay, I ended up writing my other idea based on the prompt workplace visit. This is way different than anything I've written so I would appreciate the feedback!

Warning: there's s pretty important Original Character on this one so I hope that's okay.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Doctor DeLuca was beautiful. Everyone could see that the second they met the Italian physician, and doctor Amanda Kane was no exception. She had been mesmerized by Dr. DeLuca’s beauty since she started her OB/GYN residency under the famous doctor a couple months ago and that infatuation hadn’t worn off during that time, if anything else, it had become stronger, almost like an actual crush. But could anyone blame her? It was not just that the Italian was gorgeous, of course not, but she was also extremely kind and intelligent, how could anyone not fall for that? And Amanda wasn’t blind, she knew she was not the only one who thought the same but everyone, just like herself, kept it close to their chests, not wanting to make fools of themselves.

Amanda, for her part, had many reasons not to act on her attraction on the brunette doctor. First of all, she didn’t know if the Italian liked women. Yes, she had heard her make flirty remarks on Dr. Shepherd but straight girls did that with their friends all the time, it didn’t mean anything. Also, even if she had caught a vibe or two, Amanda’s gaydar was terrible, to the point where her friends used to tell her ‘if you like that woman, she’s probably straight’, and, sadly, in most cases it was true.

The second reason to keep it in her pants, so to speak, was that Dr. DeLuca was way out of her league. Don’t get her wrong, Amanda knew she was pretty with her sandy blonde hair and clear hazel eyes, plus she liked to workout, so she could say she had a pretty figure, but Carina DeLuca was on a whole other level, no questions asked. There was no way a simple mortal like herself could ever be with a Goddess such as the Italian.

And the third, and probably most important, reason was simple: Dr. DeLuca was her boss and she would never do anything unprofessional that could jeopardize her medical training. End of story.

But that didn’t mean she couldn’t daydream from time to time. Think about making the woman smile or fantasize about taking her out to a date. Oh, yeah, that would be a dream, right?

However, these daydreams were disturbed by something, or better said, by someone, on a nice Tuesday afternoon as she pretended to update some patients’ files on the nurses’ station just outside Dr. DeLuca’s office. Amanda, with a tablet on hand, was correcting some typos from her latest update when she heard the door in front of her open. She instinctively looked up, putting on her best smile, to say hi to her boss after not seeing her since the morning due to some appointments the Italian had on her calendar, but her smile faltered when it wasn’t the brunette the one who came out the door. It was a blonde woman. She was very pretty, Amanda would not lie, but there was something about her that the intern could not pin down. She looked slightly familiar, but she was not wearing any uniform that marked her as part of the hospital and yet she moved around like she owned the place as she said her goodbyes to the nurse to her side. Amanda was annoyed that the nurse didn’t say the blonde’s name, she merely replied with a ‘have a nice day, too’, but she was not about to ask her for information on the mystery woman. After the woman’s visit, Dr. DeLuca’s lips had curved into a permanent smile the remaining hours of her shift, which would have been an incredible sight to behold if it didn’t bother Amanda so much that the blonde was the cause of it.

The next time Amanda saw the mystery blonde, as she had come to call her in her head, it was in the hospital cafeteria. The young OB hadn’t noticed her or Dr. DeLuca at first  as she rushed to the line before more people got there, she only became aware of their presence once she had her food on her tray and started looking for a place to sit down. As usual, her eyes were drawn to the Italian first, smiling at how pretty and relaxed her boss looked, but her smile fell as quickly as it had appeared when she noticed the blonde woman sitting next to her, stealing a french fry from her plate and making the doctor laugh in the process. Oh, Amanda loved the sound of that laugh but she couldn’t help but resent the blonde for being the reason behind it. Just then, Dr. Shepherd joined their table which made Amanda feel more at ease as she finally found a place to sit but the bad feeling on the pit of her stomach only went away when the Italian had left the table after being paged for an emergency, according to the apology she heard the brunette give the other women. Amanda watched as the two of them kept talking and laughing –in an awfully familiar manner, meaning they were more than just acquaintances– until the blonde finished her meal, after which she told Dr. Shepherd goodbye. The intern’s food didn’t taste as good after that exchange.

The third time Amanda saw the mystery blonde, she was down in the pit along with Dr. Wilson, a third year OB resident she didn’t know very well but who everyone else loved. Amanda had heard she also was a general surgeon but had switched to OB, meaning she had way more experience than she did, which kinda scared her a bit. She didn’t want to fuck up in front of her, although not only because she was her superior in many ways, but because she was very close to Dr. DeLuca as well. They were checking on a pregnant woman who came into the ER after experiencing shortness of breath and dizziness, symptoms which weren’t uncommon during pregnancy but paired with a pre existing heart condition, they were motive to go see a doctor. Amanda was checking the woman’s vitals as Dr. Wilson looked at her electronic chart when there was a commotion on the ambulance bay, like when a trauma came in. Amanda looked up from what she was doing to see the automatic doors opening and many people pulling a gurney inside, spotting the blonde head a few seconds later. But upon taking a closer look, she saw that the woman was not pushing the gurney, she was standing it the low rails as she performed CPR to the victim while a couple of doctors and a very pretty black woman pulled the stretcher to the trauma room.

She wouldn’t admit it to anyone else but the mystery blonde looked very hot while resuscitating a person.

And she finally realized why the woman had looked so familiar. She was some kind of first responder –she didn’t get a good look at her uniform and made a mental note to do that–, and that was probably why she got along with some doctors.

The blonde and her partner came out of the trauma room a few moments later, pulling along the stretcher that belonged to their ambulance, and they approached the nurses’ station.

“I’m gonna go get his stuff from the rig.” The black woman said, walking to the ER’s door.

The blonde nodded. “Sure, I’ll start filling the form.” She said, but instead of asking the nurse behind the desk for the patient drop off form, she pulled out her phone, typed something and put it away, but those short moments were all Amanda needed to inspect the blonde from head to toe.

Her dark uniform revealed she was a firefighter, which made Amanda curse internally because that made the woman way cooler than she originally thought. The uniform was well pressed even with the hustle of performing CPR and it was fitted so well one would not think a person ran into fires with that.

Amanda saw that the blonde was so focused on the form given by the nurse that she didn’t see the Italian doctor approach her from behind. The mystery woman turned around when she felt a couple of taps on her shoulder, smiling wide upon seeing the brunette who mimicked her expression. They couldn’t exchange more than a hello when the other firefighter came back in, handing the few belongings of the patient to the nurse and telling the blonde it was time to go, not without saying hi to the doctor as well.

“Duty calls.” The blonde firefighter said, shrugging as she handed the nurse the clipboard. “See you tomorrow, doctor.”

Amanda noticed the Italian chewing on the corner of her lip as she nodded. “See you tomorrow, lieutenant.”

And then the blonde and her coworker were gone, Dr. DeLuca wandering for a second before taking her leave too.

Ugh, she didn’t get a name again.

“Are you listening to me?”

Those words finally broke Amanda out of her thoughts, returning her attention to Dr. Wilson and their patient. Shit. She hadn’t been listening to the other OB.

“Uh…” The intern shook her head. “I’m sorry, I got a little lost.” She admitted.

Dr. Wilson rolled her eyes but explained everything to Amanda again.

“Let’s get someone to bring her to the floor so we can monitor her.” The OB resident finished and made a move to leave but Amanda stopped her.

“Dr. Wilson, do you know who’s that blonde firefighter?” The intern blurted out before she could stop herself, immediately regretting asking. She hoped the resident hadn’t seen the blonde so she could dismiss her own question, but apparently she was not that lucky.

The other doctor looked at the now empty ambulance bay and returned her eyes to Amanda. “The one who just left?” She pointed at the exit with a thumb over her shoulder. “That’s Dr. DeLuca’s wife.”

Wife.

Wife.

Oh crap, it couldn’t be, could it?

Amanda couldn’t stop the snort that came from her. “No, for real. What’s her name?”

The surgeon arched a brow, slightly annoyed by the intern. “Her name is Maya and she is Carina’s wife.” She maintained, crossing her arms over her chest. “Why would I lie?”

Amanda took a second to think.

“I don’t know… to mess with the new kid?” She shrugged and looked away.

Dr. Wilson didn’t even try to suppress her second eye roll. “You’ve never noticed Carina’s ring?” She lifted her left hand and wiggled her fingers.

Amanda took another second to think.

“She wears many rings.” She replied, thinking about her boss’ hands which would normally be a happy thought but now not so much as she remembered the slightly-thicker-than-the-others golden ring that adorned her left ring finger. That was just a regular ring, right? She didn’t even have an engagement ring like most people wore along with their wedding bands.

Dr. Wilson chuckled at those words. “Okay, you can think whatever you want or ask  Carina since you don’t believe me. I don’t care what you do as long as you actually do your job, okay?” Dr. Wilson replied, turning around and walking away.

Amanda sighed and did as she was told, trying to push the thought of Dr. DeLuca being married out of her mind.

Over the course of the next few days she tried to ignore the subject altogether, to the point of even avoiding her boss, something she never thought she would do. On a Friday afternoon, she was looking through some old patient files that were still not in the system for some reason, when her phone stared ringing and she realized she had a scheduled appointment in a few minutes. She took the files between her arms and got up from behind the desk she occupied.

She made the common mistake of walking and looking at her phone which resulted in her bumping into someone and dropping all her files as she decided to save her phone.

“Crap, I’m so sorry.” The intern said, eyes focused on getting the files in order.

“No, I was distracted too, let me help you.” The other person said, getting down on her knees to help Amanda gather the papers on the floor.

However, the young OB froze as she heard that voice. She had only heard to it a few times but that was enough to recognize it. She didn’t look up right away though, not wanting to face the other blonde, but that might have been worse as she noticed the gold piece of jewelry wrapped around her ring finger.

That was definitely a wedding band.

Amanda finally gathered the courage and looked up, coming face to face with the woman who gave her an apologetic smile as she slowly got up and handed her her papers. “Here.” The firefighter said, looking at the doctor up and down as she waited for her to take the files from her hands. “Oh, you’re an OB.” She pointed out. “Do you happen to know where is Dr. DeLuca?”

Amanda was still a little in shock, inspecting the woman closely, almost getting lost in her blue eyes. “Uh, I’m…” She shook her head, trying to make her brain react. “Do you have an appointment with her?” She ended up asking, still in denial even after all the facts presented to her.

The other woman chuckled, the files still in her hands. “No, I don’t. I’m actually –” She didn’t have a chance to finish her sentence as another voice interrupted her.

“Bambina!” The Italian doctor came from behind Amanda, pretty much ignoring her to make her way to the blonde, gently placing a hand on her cheek and leaning to press a soft peck on her lips. “Ready for lunch?”

The firefighter nodded, mindlessly licking her lips while she looked at the brunette. “Yeah, l’m ready.” Her gaze shifted to the younger OB and motioned for her to take her files one more time.

Amanda took the hint and it was when Dr. DeLuca noticed her. “Dr. Kane, I see you’re looking through the files I told you about.”

Amanda nodded, almost frantically, and gave her boss a tense smile. “Yeah, this cases are very interesting, thank you for pointing them out.”

The Italian smiled at her student. “I’m glad you think so.” Then she looked at the woman to her side and back to the other doctor. “I don’t think I’ve introduced you to my wife, have I?”

Amanda almost choked on her saliva. “No, you have not.”

“I’m Maya Bishop, nice to meet you.” The firefighter extended a hand for the other woman to shake.

Amanda did just that, inadvertently squeezing the woman’s hand a little bit harder that it would be cordial. “Amanda Kane. The pleasure is mine.” She added, almost biting her tongue.

The blonde didn’t comment or even react to the strong handshake and let go of the doctor a second later. “I guess I’ll see you around.”

“Y-yeah.” Amanda stuttered, hugging the files tighter to her chest.

“Don’t forget our appointment with Ms. Charles at 4 pm.” The brunette reminded her student, taking her wife’s hand in her own.

Amanda’s eyes drifted to the contact before returning to the Italian’s face. “I won’t forget, Dr. DeLuca.”

The woman nodded in response before turning to look at the firefighter. “Let’s go, bella.”

“Let’s go.” The blonde replied and started tugging the doctor along, turning her head slightly to wave the other doctor goodbye.

Amanda just stayed there, almost like she was nailed to the floor, looking as the couple walked away and destroyed her hopes and dreams.

Would it be bad if she also had a tiny crush on the blonde now?

Notes:

Aren't we all Amanda Kane, having a crush on both of them? 🤭🤭🤭
