Summary
After a long and bloody campaign against Louisianan forces led by Ada Creaux, the Colonels of Americanist Texas are ready to call a truce. Allison Maverick, the Colonel of Austin and the unofficial leader of negotiations, finds herself increasingly attracted to the woman she believes is best described the words "evil, murderous traitor," and although Ada is nothing but friendly and generous, Allison hates herself for it. The whole affair culminates with an invitation by Ada to meet, in private, by the lakeside, ostensibly to discuss the truce negotiations without Allison's fellow colonels getting in the way -- but diplomacy isn't usually conducted under bright stars on the water's edge.
