Aerion fell asleep.
His body curled up near the fire, Duncan's coat wrapped around his like a cocoon. But instead of feeling comfortable, Aerion’s breathing sounded heavy. Sweat beaded on his temples, a stark contrast to the chill outside. His hands gripped the coat tightly, as if it were the only thing that would protect him.
Duncan frowned and stepped closer. As an alpha raised in the North, his instincts immediately sensed something was suspicious. This wasn't just exhaustion or cold, he thought.
Aerion stirred restlessly in his sleep, his face slightly buried in the thick fur. Duncan crouched down next to him, watching him more closely.
The prince's silver hair was a mess, his skin flushed with the unnatural heat, and the way he nestled in the cloak… That’s not normal. To Duncan, the sight was odd, yet also very clear in one way.
Aerion looked like a wild creature defending his own little space.
Or…
Like a dragon.
A dragon nesting, wrapped in whatever felt safe enough to protect itself. Duncan was silent for a moment. He didn't know whether to wake it or leave it alone.
