The Five Year Breakup

Harry breathed deeply and tried not to let memories overtake him. He had been blindsided when Draco dumped him with only a curt letter delivered by owl. Work Text:

“Auror Potter, there is an urgent request from St. Mungo’s for an ongoing situation.”

Harry looked up from his paperwork. His assistant of over six years, Susan Bones, stood in his doorway, an unreadable expression on her face.

“Can you get someone else to go, I’m swamped.”

Harry barely noticed Susan lingering. “Harry, it needs to be you.” Her voice was gentle, but there was an undercurrent of something that he couldn’t place.

He looked up sharply at the use of his first name. She was his friend and confidant on more than one occasion, but the witch was resolutely professional and only used his official title at work.

Harry got up quickly and grabbed the steering wheel portkey she was holding. A chill ran up his spine when instead of letting go, she gripped it with him as they were whisked away.

---

They apparated straight to the spell Damage Ward, Susan leading the way. Harry heard snippets of conversation floating around them. He winced when he overheard whispers of “Malfoy” all around.  If this concerned Draco, Harry absolutely could not be involved.

Susan kept a tight grip on him as they went, shouting orders and demanding the Healer immediately. The tension in his stomach coiled tighter as they stopped at a room with Malfoy written on the door.

He couldn’t do this. It had been five years since he had seen Draco last, and he was still heartbroken.

He breathed deeply and tried not to let memories overtake him. He had been blindsided when Draco dumped him with only a curt letter delivered by owl. They had been so deliriously happy, and he had trouble processing the words written. He still remembered the sting of each one.

Draco had called what they had a fling, something for a bit of fun. He wrote that he was going to honor a betrothal contract to Astoria Greengrass. That it was time to live up to his family name. He had even signed it best wishes, like he didn’t care that he was ripping out Harry’s heart.

Harry attempted to get Draco to talk to him, he apparated to the Manor gates but the wards flung him away violently. As he left, he spotted Draco watching him dispassionately from a window. He received a wedding invitation the next day, the words, “it is done” in Draco’s elegant script.

Draco left for the continent immediately after.

Susan’s voice broke through the memories, and he shook his head focusing on the present. There was a Healer there, clearing his throat to be heard.

“Auror Potter, we realize this is unconventional, but the patient is distraught, and we cannot calm him. He keeps insisting on only speaking to you. He won’t let anyone else near him and has had to be physically restrained from attacking our staff.”

“I’m sorry, but why would Draco Malfoy be insistent on talking to me, we have not been in contact in over five years.”

The Healer looked on in shock. ” I’m sorry, has no one briefed you on the entire situation yet.”

“Obviously not.”

“Mr. Malfoy is the victim of Obliviation and the effects of a family curse. Mr. Malfoy remembers nothing of the past five years. “

Harry’s legs buckled under him at the news. Draco didn’t remember. He was floored, but something like hope sprung in his chest. If Draco didn’t remember, then maybe..

“Healer, we will need every bit of evidence that you have in this matter. We need every single person on this floor under strict orders of silence, we will be requiring oaths.” Susan barked for him.

Suddenly, a commotion behind them caught their attention. Harry snapped his eyes to the room as he immediately recognized the voice shouting within.

“You will get me Auror Harry Potter this instant, or so help me, every bit of Malfoy funding towards this institution will be revoked immediately! Now UNHAND me”

Then, so quickly he might have apparated, Draco was in front of him, gripping his arms, and pulling Harry into a bone crushing hug. It was almost more than he could process, but Harry just held on for dear life.

Harry pulled back from Draco, and those silver eyes alight with warmth restarted Harry’s heart.  “Potter. Thank goodness, you have to end this madness. Lucius is off his rocker and threatening me with marriage to a woman. I have no idea how I ended up here. These imbeciles would not contact you immediately.”

Harry couldn’t even contain his joy as he pulled Draco close, linking their hands. There were huge obstacles ahead of them, Lucius, obliviation, memory loss, and so much more. But to be honest, they were strong enough to handle it all. At least now they had that chance.

“Okay, Malfoy calm down. We will figure this out together.”
