Alhaitham raised an extremely incredulous eyebrow. “I had been labouring under the impression that we were at least friends, but please feel free to correct this misunderstanding of mine.”
Kaveh gaped. “That’s not what I meant and you know that!” he exclaimed, crossing his arms, “I just... you... it’s nothing like you!”
Alhaitham chuckled, oddly amused by this turn of events. “That’s why it’s called fiction, Kaveh.”The newest installment of his favourite light novel series had just released, and Kaveh can't stop talking about it. Alhaitham does not know how to feel about this turn of events.
Or- Alhaitham moonlights as a famous light novel author.

Alhaitham frowned. “I do not understand what this has to do with anything.”
Kaveh continued, undeterred, “Most of them like to ship them with other characters. Like the War God, or the God of Healing. Because when canon is done perfectly, it’s more fun to ship other interesting side pairings. The more... nonexistent ones, where there are things that can be fixed and talked about.” 😍

“Is this your way of proposing to me?” Alhaitham asked with a wry smile.

A beat of silence passes between them. Then Xingqiu manages a lame, “...I have no idea what this is.”
Chongyun’s brows crease adorably at his words, lips pursed in thought as he studies the offending object. “I would recognize your handwriting anywhere,” he says and unfolds the paper, thumb brushing over the Commerce Guild’s embellishment in the corner.

Summary
Kaveh has achieved so much today, it should be fine to do this much for himself. It should be fine to enjoy this much. There is absolutely nothing that Al-Haitham could possibly do to ruin this day!
Of course, this is when Al-Haitham chooses to walk in covered in blood.
Kaveh has enough troubles on his plate even without dealing with his confusing relationship with and unfortunately lingering feelings for his stubborn, infuriating roommate. But when a strange conspiracy begins closing in on Al-Haitham and threatening the precarious balance of their daily lives, Kaveh finds himself having to reevaluate the nature of their relationship and reckon with the ghosts of the past.

There’s never really a good time, way, or reason to tell Kaveh about his long-lived, amoral, exiled, criminal ex-partner — who, Al-Haitham will note, was not any of those things at the time they were involved.
However, there is definitely a worst way for Kaveh to find out.
