Luke opens his eyes again just so he can glare, first at Bobby and then at the annoyingly telling sleeves of the brown plaid flannel he’d put on after rehearsal only because he kept shivering in just his tank top. “I’m not upset about anything,” he promises. “Just wasn’t feeling good.”

"Two days ago my mom told me my grandmother was in town and wanted to meet with me," Alex starts, not giving himself any more time to think. Willie's thumb traces circles on the back of his hand, comforting him. "I thought, maybe my grandmother wants to connect with her only remaining family. That's how it started out, too. It really seemed like that was her intention. But then she asked about—I can't even remember his full name. But she asked me about the prince of Beasiga. The prince of Beasiga, who was my father." Willie's thumb stops.
