His eyes widen, when another ugly glob of red falls on his shirt. His head jerks up. At some point he must have lost his makeshift bandage. His nose is still bleeding, the bridge of it already shimmering blue and starting to swell. So is his left eye. Leftover blood is caked below his nose and to his cheek and chin, itching. The sight alone makes tears come to his eyes. He abandons the lump of towels for a moment to grab another, rolls it, and stuffs it into his nose to stop the bleeding.

Only a few moments later, though, Bobby nudges Luke’s side with his foot and says into the darkness, “Hey, but seriously, bro, you doing okay? I see you’ve got your sleeves on.”
Luke opens his eyes again just so he can glare, first at Bobby and then at the annoyingly telling sleeves of the brown plaid flannel he’d put on after rehearsal only because he kept shivering in just his tank top. “I’m not upset about anything,” he promises. “Just wasn’t feeling good.”

Julie told Flynn how the boys died from eating bad hot dogs. They laughed about it at the time. It seemed so funny, such an undignified death, fitting in its stupidity. Flynn had giggled, “They would, wouldn’t they?” and gone on with her day.
She hates herself for it now. There’s nothing, nothing funny about Alex shaking on the ground, whimpering from the pain in his stomach.
