He gets bitten three days after Ellie’s tattoo while hauling an infected off of a trainee, a 17 year old named Clara who reminds him of Ellie with her sass and her smile, even though she’s a good half a foot taller than his little slip of a girl. She’s a good kid, has a solid head on her shoulders, but she’s still learning, and even with the trainees paired off with an adult, shit happens.

Ellie is good at hiding. Good at hiding things. Good at hiding herself. When they played hide and seek at school, she was almost always the last one found. It did kinda make the other kids stop wanting to play with her unless she let them win sometimes, but you know. That was their problem, not hers.
