Summary
Erin Gilbert is not the first straight girl Jillian Holtzmann has ever fallen for.
Here’s the thing: she’s good at patterns. She’s good at identifying patterns. Holtzmann isn't a mathematician but that doesn't mean she's not great at numbers and evaluating data and drawing a conclusion. She's a goddamn genius. This shit is easy in the way that people are difficult. Erin Gilbert is not the second or even the fifth straight girl Jillian’s ever fallen for, and it’s kind of getting to be a problem, except when she sees Dr Erin Gilbert, she thinks, maybe, this woman might be a statistical outlier. Nobody can wear that much tweed and be straight, surely. And she keeps trying, hopefully, to believe that, until the Kevin Crush makes it pretty fucking clear that it’s a losing bet. No big. Jillian is used to this, after all, and it’s totally definitely not going to be a problem at all.

They’ve just met, but she can already tell that this Erin Gilbert, Doctor of Particle Physics is going to be the most beautiful thing she's ever tried to take to pieces.
Or
A brief summary of Jillian's life, culminating in the situation as we know it, where Holtzmann falls in love with Erin and doesn’t realise until it’s almost too late.

Summary
Holtzmann notices that Erin doesn’t curse but then that shouldn’t be a surprise because Holtzmann notices everything Erin does or does not do. She notices the way she always folds her paper bags from the deli neatly into quarters before she puts them into the trash, how she likes to have her marker pens lined up along her desk, perfectly side by side, in colour order. She notices that she never turns the corners down on book pages, never eats near her computer, and never writes in the margins of her notebooks. Not cursing is just another one of her adorable quirks, as far as Holtzmann is concerned.
It starts out as a cat and mouse game, and turns into something else.

Summary
Erin isn't into Holtzmann. She just likes it when they hang out together. Okay, so when she thinks about being an old woman, she sort of assumes there will be a grey-haired Holtzmann next to her. So what if she feels a little giggly every time Holtzmann brings her a coffee? It's not like that happens every day. (It does.)
It's not like she spends much time calculating how many inches separate them, and she definitely doesn't wonder what it would be like to make that number 'zero'. (She does.)
And, fine, she wants to know everything about her, including what happened to her parents, but that's just being a good friend. It doesn't mean she secretly wants to kiss Holtzmann. (Except it totally does.)

Summary
Holtzmann wakes up because of the rain. It's 3 A.M. Erin is sleeping soundly next to her, curled up in fetal position, hand reaching towards Holtzmann's side of the bed. Holtzmann turns to her side and watches her, not daring to touch her, to cross the line between wanting and having.
Or five times Holtzmann said she was fine and one time she was.
