The worst part of it all is Ponk, who acts like nothing is wrong, like Sam didn't ruin his life.

Xelqua was not afraid. No. He was not afraid of whatever thing this was. He wasn’t scared of the rumbling of the earth, and the loud sound that came with it. He wasn’t afraid. He was a Watcher who fought his way out of the collapse and onto a world. He had been well aware that he could’ve just floated in the void for the rest of eternity. But with the way everything had gone down, it was a less safe option than finding his way here. Wherever here was.
The ground shook and there was another loud ‘boom.’ This one came with a crash shortly after. Xelqua huddled into his wings. He was not hiding. He was simply trying to warm up from the rain. He was not hiding, nor was he scared. He was Xelqua, and he was afraid of nothing.

Summary
Grian has been many things.
A servant of a respected noble family. A survivor, with bruises on his skin and hidden wings tied down to his back. A rebel, sneaking away for a night of wonder in the heart of the kingdom - and a curiosity, gawked at by all as the King himself swept him into his arms and spent hours by his side.
When Scar spent days tracking Grian down and helping him escape the cruel grasp of the Watchers, Grian thought his life couldn’t surprise him anymore. Pledging his life to serve Scar was all he could do to thank his King.
Of course, being the personal servant of the King comes with its' own risks - and now Grian could add ‘hostage’ to his list of titles.
Or; someone decides kidnapping King Scar’s beloved servant was a good idea. It really wasn’t.
