Summary
“You- you can airbend?” The girl’s voice rang out behind him, voicing the thought that he hadn't been able to form himself.
Because that was ridiculous. He was an earthbender. How would he be able to bend air? That was impossible.
Impossible unless-
Jae had only been trying to talk to the little airbender that he had spotted during the festival when his life fell apart. Now he suddenly has to reconcile everything he had ever been taught about the avatar with the revelation of skills he had never known he possessed, and hide his newfound identity from everyone he loves. All while the aforementioned little airbender keeps following him around.
Meanwhile, the White Lotus is catching wind of the return of the avatar. Nisha, a young recruit eager to prove herself in the eyes of her teacher/dad/boss, makes it her personal mission to discover who it is.
Or: swap AU where Jae is the earthbending avatar, Pavi is his airbending hypeman, and Nisha is a White Lotus member

For one night, in the warmth of Datu's apartment, Jae allows himself to imagine what it might feel like to forget, and when he finally does, Datu is there to catch him, holding him close and offering comfort without knowing the truth behind his tears.

“Hi!” Pavi says cheerfully.
”What - ? You - ?” Jae makes a few more noises that aren’t coherent even to his own mind before finally asking, “How do you know where I live?!”
”Avatar powers,” Nisha says with enough confidence that Jae almost believes it.
”We followed you,” Pavi clarifies.
Jae is hardly surprised anymore. He covers his face with one hand and thanks the Havens that at least Datu is working night shift tonight.

Summary
After another stressful and fruitless training session, Jae follows Pavi out of the Brigade Compound and to the edge of Ellora. If he can't fix the trust he broke with his promise, she'll bolt back out of the haven and into the harshlands.
Datu goes looking to spend his break with Jae, only to find that his squad doesn't know where he is. His search through Ellora leads him to naan, and more importantly, the homeless nine year old girl his partner found in the harshlands and didn't tell him about.
