Marco was about to open his eyes and reach out to bring Jean back, only to freeze when he registered the voice of Jean’s father shouting in the room. It was followed closely by the sound of Jean thudding to the floor and groaning in pain, making Marco’s stomach lurch.

Just like that, there was a new kernel of hope wedging into Marco’s heart. Jean obviously had not read any of Marco’s last several texts, which was expected, but the response rather than ignorance was the thread by which Marco hung. Despite his better judgment, Marco leaned into this slim chance at something with Jean. He told himself it was okay since he still had his escape plan via Thomas to fall back on. What were a few more days of pining after all these years?
