The Enterprise is sent on a mission from Starfleet to conduct a census of all the surviving Vulcans left in the galaxy after the destruction of the planet. Including the ones that don't want to be counted.
While trying to locate a rumored settlement of traditionalist Vulcans, Captain Kirk and Commander Spock crash a shuttle into a desert planetoid where the multiple suns and the oppressive heat above ground are decidedly not good for Kirk's health. But perhaps they're a little less dangerous than what they find beneath the sand...

As Spock’s failure to answer continues to hang awkwardly between them, the hopeful plea in the Captain’s face slowly melts into bitterness. Spock’s long reticence finally cracks open to reveal something painful and cold between them, punctuating the equally cold pain of his thoughts.
“Fine,” the Captain finally speaks, breaking the silence. “If you want a direct question, here is a direct question. Did you fuck the Romulan?”

However, due to bitter whispers in the orchestra about his promotion, Jim finds himself doubting whether he has earned the role, so he decides that an audition must be held to determine the new concert master. He does not expect Spock, the orchestra's newest violinist, to steal the role right out from under him. Now, he has to work side by side with the person who stole his dream job from him, which is easier said than done.
