Summary
Ever since the Great Conflict, the tension between Shadowhunters and Downworlders has been palpable. Blood in the streets doesn't wash away easily. In order to manufacture peace, Alec is married to a Warlock he has never met before, Magnus Bane.
Right away Alec can see that Magnus hates him, despite them pledging their lives to each other. Still, Alec isn't what Magnus was expecting and he isn't quite prepared to keep him out of his heart.

Summary
Most people get their Soulmarks any time between fifteen and twenty. A few words, sometimes a sentence or even two. The next words their soulmate will say to them. Usually, the first words they'll ever hear from their soulmate.
Magnus never got a Soulmark. He's looked. Many times.
At first he just assumed it was because of what he was, some byproduct of his freakishness. In his centuries, he's learned differently. Most immortals, most warlocks like him, they get Soulmarks the same time as everyone else. Sometimes they have to wait decades, centuries, to hear those words. Some of them find another Soulmark, decades after living a life with their first.
But not Magnus.
Alec has never spoken a word. He can't. In a world where soulmates are connected by Soulmarks that show the first words the other will say to them, he wonders what this means for his soulmate.

Summary
The day Alec died had been a day like any other. It was a spring day, and the sky had been clear without a cloud in sight, only the wide expanse of never-ending blue visible. They said he died alone.
In the morning Magnus had made a comment on the balcony about the way the soft light had made Alec shine as the breeze was rustling his hair. Had kissed him goodbye for the day.
In the evening he sat beside Alec’s body in the cold institute.

Alec dies and Magnus is left to deal with it, until seven months later when Alec comes walking into the loft, covered in dirt and blood. -

A century later, he returns, and can't help himself from asking about what happened to Alec. He's shocked to learn that Alec came after him, came to Edom, because he'd never seen, or even felt him there. Which meant...
Which meant his father had hidden Alec from him, and Magnus cannot, and will not abandon Alec to that place. No matter how they ended.
