Summary
Troy Barrett has been estranged from his father for most of his life. So when he gets a call about his sudden passing he feels… indifferent. However, as the sole heir to his estate (a decrepit Victorian home and a failing automotive shop) he must venture to the smallest town in North America, New Leaf, to settle his assets. Preferably as quickly as possible.
Except everyone here seems really interested in him for some reason. Especially the mayor and the weird Russian guy who runs the town bakery with his husband.
However, Troy's only interest is settling the estate and leaving for good. (Possibly after kissing Harris Drover on the mouth at least once.)

He knew that Troy got quiet when something was bothering him. He knew Troy secretly loved terrible reality television despite complaining through every episode. He knew Troy called his mom every Sunday night even when they had nothing to talk about. He knew when Troy needed space and when “space” was the absolute last thing he actually needed. He knew Troy hated having people sing “Happy Birthday” to him. And he knew Troy’s favorite cake (yellow cake with chocolate frosting).

Luca was so young. He was the kind of rookie that would’ve been destroyed in Toronto, and the kind that Troy wanted to protect now.
Maybe that was part of it. Maybe knowing firsthand how much scrutiny being openly queer could bring made something protective flare up in Troy’s chest before he even realised it.
Or maybe, Troy was jealous.
Maybe he knew that Luca wouldn’t be doing this if he’d landed in Toronto like Troy had. Maybe he was jealous that the road had already been paved for Luca to come out so early into his career and be welcomed with open arms.
