The thing is—it hadn’t been completely unknown to anyone, that the junior boat was getting to be just as fast as the varsity boat. They practice at the same time; it would have been difficult for anyone to miss the rate at which the junior boat was improving.
Before the day of sprints, though, Joe had figured that varsity had been going slower than them because they were more focused on technique. They’d probably mastered the art of going fast, he’d imagined, so it made sense that Ulbrickson would make them focus on the art of going fast well.
