    Summary

“You’re way too calm about this. Banzoin ‘Chillmaster 69’ Hakka over here dragging me around an hour before doomsday.”

His car’s covered in a thin layer of dust. Flayon doesn’t really take it out anymore. And besides, it never really worked on the best of days, so it was just easier to pretend he didn’t have it at all.

“I think it’s cool,” Hakka says, fiddling with his seatbelt. It’s impossible to be comfortable in this thing. “Like, doesn’t that make us like the dinosaurs? That’s pretty awesome.”

Flayon laughs against his better instincts. “It was the dust that killed them,” he adds, but more importantly, he laughs. The sound bounces around their tiny shared space, and he briefly considers opening the windows to flush it out faster. It’s never been something he could easily contain.

    “Still cool.”

    Summary

Things could be different when they’re together. Everyone respects Hakka for his skill, even if they can’t understand why he thinks Flayon is worth so much of his time.

He supposes Hakka was not always a fearsome hunter in the same way that he was not always his boyfriend. These are roles they’ve grown into over the years, and now they are theirs and theirs alone, covered in ivy and lace. It’s not that complicated.

It’s a good thing too, the greatest blessing he’s ever had.

    -

    Summary

Hakka is not just a normal, boring fool. No, sometimes he’s also a sentimental one, and a kind one, and sometimes even a sweet one.

Hakka is a frequent crier when they’re trapped behind closed doors– a fact known only to his intimates, which Flayon supposed he is now. Sort of.

The friendship plan is going much smoother now, aided by some genuine showcases of vulnerability and the real feelings that sink through his chest like cannonballs, forced down by their sheer gravity alone. And with it, with that closeness and deeper understanding, comes the growing suspicion that something truly is off about him.

Perhaps this mission has promise after all.

    Summary

Hakka does not lose his smile. He never seems to when they’re together. Instead, he just accepts the tin with both hands, tossing out an offhanded compliment about how Flayon was always so good at baking, and he's generally so nice and accommodating that it would make a lesser man swoon and possibly even consider making amends.

Flayon refuses to be that lesser man though. He’s certainly not going to break his petty vow of enmity just because Hakka approaches with a morsel of kindness the second they reunite.

He’s not a duck or a dog or the kind of animal that grows to love you just because you approach with a kind heart.

    -

aka: Flayon is just a little petty when he meets Hakka again, partnership be damned, because he cannot forget when they were pâtissier Flayon and legumier Hakka and he decided they would be nothing more than enemies. But then, of course, sometimes things change.

    Summary

And maybe because he did love him once, just maybe, (is it crazy to hope so?) Hakka decides to indulge him much more than he really should, leaning in as if he’s about to try for something more without Flayon even needing to ask. He leans and enlargens and he’s warm like a particularly long and lovely candle.

But he doesn’t love him. Or he can’t love him.

    That's the point.

So he only leans a very scant amount, just enough for Flayon to watch his teeth turn to pearls in front of his very eyes, before getting up and snuffing out all the flames in his path.

    Summary

Flayon is nothing but iron and blood, so it doesn’t really interest him.

He knew a fairy once, too.

That’s how he knows it can never work out.

If he said something like that to Hakka, he would only apologise for the both of them as if he was the one who did something wrong. He’d squeeze his hand tight, eyes trained up and up and up above them, backs flat on the slanted sun-warmed roof like two parallel lines.

    Summary

Hakka is all mercurial sunshine and jagged edges. He’s a second year in the piloting course, like him. He prefers the sea to the mountains. Likes guitars but is partial to all sorts of music, got stomach sick when he first tried to run around the entire span of the school in a bet on their first day there, thinks birds are pretty damn cool as fellow flyers, likes gardening in his free time, and has a set of siblings he curses and loves with all of his heart. Each piece of information is a gossamer thread in the carefully woven picture that is Banzoin Hakka. It’s something to hold on to, steadfast, the kind of knowledge that can be forged into deadly weapons.

He offers him a sip from his still-warm drink as they continue to wait in line and it tastes a bit like the herbal growth supplements he used to chase down with stolen pieces of chocolate. He tells Hakka as much and he laughs like he’s delighted, like he doesn’t find Flayon frightening or embarrassing at all regardless of who he may seem to be.

It’s almost enough to make him falter for real this time.

He doesn’t know that his newfound friend is going to make a real ugly corpse some day.

    Summary

    “Do you want to win?”

He cannot teach anyone how to win, no matter how much he may know about the games and the Capitol.

“I want to survive,” he answers, throat thick with tears. Because it would be cruel to force his family to watch him die once they finally get the support they need.

“I’m going to do everything I can to help you,” Flayon says softly, placing his hand beside Hakka’s trembling fingers. “You’re going to be fine.”

The last part is a lie, but Hakka smiles widely for the first time that night. He smiles, vibrant and alive.

“Whoa, little dude, sorry ‘bout that,” Hakka said with a smile, reaching out to steady him with a gentle grip.

This is the moment where he should be all smooth and normal, say something cordial to make this (kind) stranger go on with his day so he can get back to staring holes into the lab door until it magically opens.

“Aren’t we like the same height though?” is what comes out of his mouth instead because when he glances down as he gathers up his words all he can see are these horrendously thick platform shoes. Seriously. They're actually fucking huge.

    Summary

“Maybe I could help you,” he eventually offers, tempting as always. It must be the demon part of him. The charisma. “Like you did with me. But maybe with a little less murder.”

Flayon has always known that he was never built to be like other people. Most of the time that was a privilege and an honour since it meant that his creator cared enough about him (about science, not him, but aren't they the same thing?) to hammer in some long-lasting code. He existed for a good reason. He lived as good of a life as he could.

But occasionally– recently, with all these weird feelings that Hakka’s presence seemed to unlock inside him, as he watches the world he’s always known (known, not seen ) with glassy eyes he feels a little empty, too creaky and old yet too young and naive all at once. There are so many things he has never, and will never, get to do. It is simply his fate.

    -

or: Hakka wakes up in the body of a demon and goes to the only person willing to hear him out, or at least, that's what he's been saying. Flayon just wants to send him home so he can go back to work.

    Summary

Call me crazy, but the only time I feel hungry is when I imagine your face and think of your eyes, storm grey-blue and filled with fire. That is how I choose to remember them, but sometimes I play with the idea, maybe instead they are a cool electric blue or a deep, deep royal ultramarine. I have never quite decided what shade fits you best, going off of the blue haze which is all I can truly remember. They’re all pretty nice, aren’t they?

    Summary

I’ve seen you die hundreds of times, he imagines in response. Eviscerated. Entombed. Effervescent. There are limits to how much anyone can ever really know him.

“Help me with the garden tomorrow,” Flayon answers instead, removing his hands from their perch in Hakka’s hair to settle on the ground and deposit his head firmly in his lap.

“Sure,” Hakka agrees, easy and smooth. “I don’t know why you’re so obsessed with it,” he continues, angling for a reaction that he’s very happy to give back.

"See, you know nothing about me!” Flayon scoffs, all show, all deflection, and they both know it. “It makes me feel better, I guess,” he hums, curling inwards to face him.

The world is ending and Hakka still wants to save it.

Flayon preens under his attention, practically vibrating with energy. He must really hate this Spermo guy.

    “So it’s SpermoHater27 because…”

“Because 27 is my favourite number and Spermo is my least favourite person!”

Was it worth clearing up? No, not really, not when Flayon starts laughing and rubbing his hands together and reciting the Joker’s lines after registering his new account. He’ll just let him play this one out.

    Summary

Here’s the thing. Hakka is someone who loves you even when you don’t feel like the best version of yourself. Even he has a limit to his patience though, to the amount he’s willing to entertain people.

Flayon has always been scared he’ll hurtle towards that limit, miscalculating how much he can really tolerate even when he never seems to mind, so he holds back. It’s always been the safest option.

Beside him, Hakka’s cheeks twitch slightly in the way they always do when he’s about to say something stupid, gearing up to preeminently suppress the resulting smile. “Yeah well, your mom.”

His eyes widen even further when his hands pass through Hakka’s.

    Oh, right. Ghost things.

It turns out the cute little (same-height, he insists, because floating above the floor adds extra inches and that’s unfair) red-haired guy is Flayon and he's never met a ghost before, but he won’t call an exorcist for him until Hakka actively tries to ruin his life. I’ve had worse roommates, he said with a grin. It didn’t make Hakka feel any better. He likes strawberries, but prefers chocolate or vanilla milkshakes. He likes red and blue, but thinks sometimes they can be too bright. He prefers mountains over the sea, likes chicken, and wouldn't mind cooking with him so he can stop doing it alone. He likes playing old games and wants to get better at other languages. He’s guarded and careful and pours so much love into everything he does that it radiates off of him like sunlight, even when he claims he doesn’t.

    He's perfect.

    Summary

And speaking of the devil, his phone buzzes with another text from Bettel.

and what even is a “mag” anyway, I mean his name is Magni but it’s still about baking right? why does he have to make it all about him all the time? and why did we all agree to it?? I’m pretty sure if I told someone I was going to mag them they would call the police on me and I’m not looking for that right now so you’ve got to help me beat his ass in this “great mag off” or whatever we want to call it

It was really Altare’s fault though; he’s the one that sent them Google Calendar invites last week for “the great elysium mag off” after a groupwatch session of Bake Off. Apex was getting a little too heated so they had to turn to pastries to cool down. Sure. And mix a bunch of competitive guys together with a little insinuation that they’d burn down the kitchen by the end of the day and suddenly Bettel’s dragging him off to the Hakkafe to learn how to bake the best damn cookies in the world.

    Summary

Hakka was everywhere. The password to his voicemail, 0421. His wallpaper, his extra face ID, his number on speed dial and his emergency contact, housed in every waking thought. His name lived in the space under his tongue, always waiting for its chance to jump out. If he went out alone with friends, he’d inevitably be pulled home, unable to stay away. It’s just a fact of life. To survive, a healthy Flayon needs 4 things: food, water, shelter, and Hakka.

Flayon was certain that if you could mill through his brain, if you could unshelf his book of life, it would naturally fall open to the page containing Hakka, spine creased and cut open from permanent revisitations, unable to turn the page.

It’s one thing to get off on your bros for one night. Just bros appreciating how cool their bros are, you know? Like when Altare killed a monster that jumped out and tried to maul him? Cool. Hot. One-time rush. It’s another to toss and turn night by night going over those same few words, imagining the cadence of his voice fluttering in his ears, and jerking off to them until they lost their effect.

It’s one thing to be in love with your guildmate and another to feel uncontrollably passionate about their voice.

And isn’t that unfair? For Hakka, who was stolen from a home he knew, to have to make one with someone who’s never had a home at all.
