Starting from a person’s 16th birthday, if they are bonded, anything they write on their skin appears on their soulmate (or soulmates) as well. Not all soulmates are romantic, but most are, and it is relatively rare for linked people to decide they would be better as friends.
Miles Edgeworth refuses to let a sentimental attachment mar his impeccable logic, and Phoenix Wright assures his soulmate that he’s fine with staying platonic; after all, he’s still more than a little bit in love with his childhood best friend.

It had taken him a while to finally give into the truth that no one was ever going to read them. After that, it had been liberating. He wrote more. Filled too many books to count and emptied his heart over and over until he could breathe again.

“Franziska knew.”
“Of course she fucking knew.” Phoenix stood suddenly from his seat on the couch. He faced Edgeworth with tears streaming down his face. “Of course SHE fucking knew, right?! SHE wasn’t there for you. SHE didn’t defend you. Where was she when you were accused of murder? NOT there! Where was SHE when you needed her the most? In fucking GERMANY!”He collapsed to the ground. Body wracked with sobs.
“Mr Nick?” a small, innocent voice. Pearl. Look what you’ve done, Phoenix, you’ve woken her up.
“Pearl, go back to bed,” he whispered through his crying. “This is a dream. Go back to bed.”
prompt: There are some mistakes that “sorry" doesn’t fix. Phoenix was making sure Miles learned that the hard way.
