Summary
Guiding Martin out of the Lonely, Jon had revelled in the softness of Martin’s hands, their gentle, dry heat a stark contrast to the mist surrounding them both. He’d moved away from Martin, though, sliding his hands into his trouser pockets and taking several steps back as soon as they were meeting with Basira for the hand-off of two train tickets to Scotland and a couple hundred pounds. She had raised an eyebrow at him, but he’d simply offered up a minute shake of the head.
It wasn’t the time, not then. Not when Martin had been barely conscious as it was, his pulse concerningly slow and his lips blue. -

Summary
He’s heard the stories. He knows his mother wouldn’t take another step on land if she could help it, not anymore. It took a long time for him to feel comfortable walking alone on the beach without anticipating torches and pitchforks at his first footfall, skin-thieves and scoundrels looking to steal him away.
Martin’s supposed to avoid humans, but he’s never been great at resisting temptation. In the aftermath of a dreadful storm, he finds himself and his sealskin coat trapped in the home of his mysterious human crush, Jon.
Navigating treacherous waters of injury, confusion, and a budding relationship, Martin feels adrift — more like Jon than he knows — yet, together, in the most unexpected of places, with the most unexpected of people, they find themselves.

"What is a monster, anyway?" Martin glanced up at Jon, eyebrows slightly raised. "Just something that doesn't look like we expect. We don't call a wolf a monster, but a /werewolf,/ well. That's monstrous, right?"
"What's truly monstrous, though? Not a wolf, that's just an animal. Humans, well… we can do all sorts of awful things to each other, so yeah, some humans can act like monsters, but we’re not /all/ like that. So why do we just assume that the werewolf is a monster? Because it doesn't look like something that we think is 'normal?' Because we assume that any human who gets all that predatory nature in them would /have/ to run around killing and eating people? I mean, fair assumption, maybe, but what if the monster /doesn't/ do that?"
Martin looked at Jon, blue eyes quite direct. "What if they, say, shut themself away in an ancient castle, avoid people entirely, try /so hard/ to protect people from their own perceived monstrosity that they push away the only person they ever interact with, in an attempt to protect him from becoming a monster himself?"
