The feeling of The Web tying her to that house was unpleasant, to be sure, but a familiar sensation. Loosely draped around her chest, they had been there for so long she almost forgot they existed sometimes, especially when her mind was much more consumed with the rather baffling man that was Jack Barnabus.

There is a woman in the Archives he doesn't know, and there is something very Wrong about her. For starters, she wasn't there the first time around. She's American, which he definitely would've remembered, and she just feels...off. So much for a fresh start...

ARCHIVIST (STATEMENT)
When people talk about selling your soul, they usually do it in that way that means they’re resigned, but not entirely miserable. They usually have at least one thing outside of their dead-end corporate desk job that brings them a tiny bit of joy – now, whether or not that thing is morally okay is up for debate, but my point stands regardless – maybe a spouse, friends, a dog, even a fish. I had none of that. My family disowned me like, maybe two decades prior? I wasn’t really keeping track. I didn’t like to think about it. Either way – no family, no friends, no steady job; a shut-in with an illegal sexuality and next to nothing to offer except pages and pages of commissioned erotica.
It’s different when you’re self-employed, because you’re selling your soul either – ironically – to yourself, or to the void, and you have no one and nothing to blame but your own stupidity. So, I stripped Proud Immortal Demon Way down to its bones and sacrificed my son to a male power fantasy that tasted like bile in my mouth.
And it worked.-
