Jon didn't expect to live through his boyfriend stabbing him in the chest. He expected to die, and for Martin to join him soon after. So why is he waking up at his desk, at the tail end of January in 2016? Martin is with him, so he would be perfectly content to let the miracle be, except for one tiny, miniscule detail. There is a woman in the Archives he doesn't know, and there is something very Wrong about her. For starters, she wasn't there the first time around. She's American, which he definitely would've remembered, and she just feels...off. So much for a fresh start...

The sole bright spot is that it's much easier to have a crush on Jon now that he's decided Martin isn't a murderer. Mostly, though, Martin's just glad to make it through the day...

She sits and thinks and sighs and drums her fingers against her thigh, wisps of web trailing from her hands. Jonathan Sims’ face lights up her laptop screen, washed out and desaturated against the garish pale green of the Institute’s (horribly outdated) website, and even as Annabelle tells herself Jonathan is a very common name, Sims perhaps not so much but still not entirely outside the realm of possibility, and really, can she really recognize him after so long apart, and this could be any Jonathan Sims marked by the Web and tugged towards the Institute — she does not need to look too closely to know it is her Jon. Her Jon, all borrowed skirts and traded books, laughter and sheet music and sea-sprayed nostalgia and skittering, scuttling, scurrying spider’s legs.
