There are only nine cases that are compatible with the Respawn Machine, and there have only ever been nine, since the project began fifty years ago.
Some of the mercenaries belong there. There was never any doubt about the newest Conagher in the long line of Conaghers, for example. And what else was the Pyrotechnician going to do, other than rot in that asylum?
But most didn't. Not for a long time. Nobody goes to war willingly, and if they do, it's not war they think they're going to. There is no glory in pointless death.
And what about the incompatible? Some simply died, but others...
