Shadow was programmed to be the Ultimate Lifeform. He is a weapon to be used in war and destruction. But he was also programmed to heal and take care of the sick. It’s always been with him. But it’s a part of his programming that he leaves untouched, not wanting to tap into the memories it comes with.
But one stubborn and very sick Hedgehog isn’t going to let him get away with that.

Summary
Maddie sometimes forgets that on top of being her son and an alien, Sonic is a hedgehog. He exhibits traits related to his Earthly counterpart. These traits can be harmless like belly rubs or purring.
They can also be damaging, as Maddie discovers after Tails and Knuckles getting sick causes Sonic so much stress that he reverts to older habits.
