Tony may not be crying, but the warble of his voice tells a different story when he speaks up again. “He was good for me. And he was good. He was the one who helped me understand I didn’t have to throw away what I believed in because of what I had with him. I mean, granted, it took me probably another decade at that point to actually get it, but at least he got the hammer going in my thick skull.”
“You do have a thick skull sometimes,” Peter grumbles.
“I take offense at that, Underoos. I have a thick skull all the time.”
Tony can practically hear the eye-roll in the kid’s tone. “I wonder sometimes what I idolized in you as a kid.”
“A question for you to answer, kid, not me. I’m just the washed-up has-been engineer playing with million-dollar titanium alloy toys in his tower.”
“I would love to take a dissertation to your face with, like, ninety-five theses on why you’re wrong,” Peter retorts, “but I’m more invested in the story. Why did you...why do you say you didn’t have to throw away everything you believed in?”

“I hate you.”
The white lenses blink and then quiver into crinkly-eyed slits as Ned rocks backward in laughter. “This is payback for mixing all the flavors. You’re disgusting, you know that?”
Peter lobs an anchovy at Ned’s face and is rewarded when the other boy yelps, his reflexes not being up to par enough to catch the projectile. “You’re a thief.”
“Yeah, well, you’re Spider-Man. You should’ve seen it coming.”
“Just because I have a ‘spidey’ sense doesn’t mean I have common sense.”
“Ohh, you said it yourself. Self-burn. Nice.” Ned sits up again, glancing all about his room in hyperenergetic focus, no doubt having thirty-seven different heart attacks from all the cool blue clusters of information and alerts set up on the screen by Karen.
“Ned,” Peter whines. “Give it back.”
“Nah, I think I’ll finish building the set like this.”
“Great, so now I’ll have two hours of footage of you in there next time I need to look through Karen’s logs.”
“Yeah, right. You can’t get enough of me.”
Peter chokes audibly on an anchovy in the background.

“Babe, why don’t we get you down from the counter first? I’m, like, having fifty different kinds of strokes just watching you and making sure you don’t fall.”
“You’re gonna get a stroke from all the pork belly you eat, anyway.”
“Oh my God, shut up.” Ned tugs Peter down from the island, and thankfully the other boy complies, landing heavily against Ned’s side. He loops Peter’s arm around his neck and shuffles them both forward into the living room. Never in his life has he been more grateful for such a tiny living space. It only takes about eight steps before they’re both collapsed on top of each other on the couch.
“Ow,” Peter whispers. “Ow. Ow. Elbow. Boob.”
“Shit, sorry.”
