Summary
' “O-Okay, Placido. Is there— Is there something you need me to do?”
“I’m sad,” slipped out in response, soft and quiet. “Something hurts, and I can never make it go away.”
“Is your mother home?” Juanito asked, loud as though he knew that he had to be if he wanted Placido to hear him through all the pounding in his head. He could still hear the dial tone ringing in his ears. He could hear everything. “We can watch a movie some other time. How about I just come over today?” '
or: in which everything looks dull and faded, no matter how bright Juanito's voice sounds over the phone.

Summary
' All this could easily be misconstrued, deluded hope— But here lies the safe space they have created in each other.
Sometimes hope is just what you make it out to be.
This is the world they live in. You may not know what that is like, but you can try to understand that the pain of those before you has made you who you are today— That land you are walking on, they thought they could get away with calling it theirs. That air you are breathing, some people were robbed of that. It is unclear, sometimes, if there is really any right way to fight. There will be times when honor need not be as important.
(When you have everyone else to fight for, and you do not know who is willing to stand behind you, it is important to go back to those you know will always be beside you.) '
or: in which Isagani and Basilio figure things out. (or don't.)

Summary
' Today, it doesn't start until halfway through third period.
He almost thinks that it's not going to come, but then he hears taptaptaptap, taptap again — and he feels stupid for getting hopeful. (But he feels even more stupid for spending fourth period decoding messages between Isagani and whoever, as their Theology professor drones on about Vatican II or something.) '
or: in which Placido's patience wears thin for a couple of idiots tapping against their armchairs.

Summary
' "I'll see you later, Placiding!" he yells out, rushing toward the classroom.
"We're in the same class, idiot," is what's called out after him. Which makes him falter in his step momentarily, but he quickly brushes it off because surely it would be absurd for someone he considers to be one of his closest friends — they eat together two days a week, come on — to not even know his name. Isagani is just messing with him, he's certain. '
or: in which Juanito tries to remember a time that Placido has called him by his name.

Summary
He brought Basilio’s hand over to his mouth, leaving a trail of kisses — from the vein pulsing at the back of his hand to the tips of his fingers, from the tips of his fingers to his palm to the inside of his wrist. “Mahal kita,” Isagani said tentatively, watching light pink turn bright red. He let a smile grace his lips — soft, sweet, and so openly adoring. “Mahal kita, mahal kita, mahal kita.”

Summary
It is said that blood runs thicker than water.
Often, this is meant to say that the bonds formed between kin are the strongest and most important. Other interpretations, though, suggest that the original expression fell more along the lines of the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb. That is, perhaps the people whom we actively decide to have in our lives are more important after all.
