Summary
“It’s so close.” Jonah said, trying to meet Barnabas’ eyes and not quite managing it. He reached past him, one hand grasping, reaching… “It’s so close, I’m so close to what I want, and…” his hand withdrew, settling to Barnabas’ hip. “And it’s just out of reach.”

Summary
“Ah,” Barnabas sighs, when he sees Jonah.
Jonah loosens his tie, slowly unknotting it. “You don’t seem pleased to see me.”
“I was sleeping.”
Jonah tosses his tie onto his desk, sheds his jacket, toes off his shoes. “You’re dead, darling. All you do is sleep.”
“Unless I’m entertaining you.”
Jonah bares his teeth in a grin. “Nothing’s changed, then.”

Summary
Jonah backs Albrecht toward the bed and sits him down, settling down beside him without ever letting go.
“Dear one,” he murmurs, one hand on either side of Albrecht’s face. “My beautiful Archive. Will you extend to me your forgiveness?”
“I don’t know what I would need to forgive you for, but—so long as you say such sweet things to me I will forgive you any slight.”
Jonah turns, shifting their positions increment by increment until Albrecht lies on his back, Jonah kneeling over him.
“You’ll understand eventually, my sweet Archive,” Jonah whispers, his mouth pressed to Albrecht’s throat. “Until then, indulge me?”
It takes Albrecht a long, slack-jawed moment to realize it’s a question. “Yes,” he eventually manages. “Anything.”

Summary
Jonah—or Mr. Magnus, he supposes, since they’re playing with identity—whimpers. He can feel blood trickling down both sides of his arm, pooling stickily where the curve of his arm meets the table.
“You look much better already, Mr. Magnus.” Jonathan says, stepping away from the table. It’s Jonathan and not Dr. Fanshawe—the smile curling his mouth is too cruel. “Perhaps with the toxin diminished we can address the root of your problem.”

Summary
“Don’t get overzealous, gentlemen,” Smirke lifted Jonah’s chin with a finger. “He’s here to be an ashtray, not an orifice.”
Jonah picked up the cigar cutter from beside his knee, smirking slightly.
“Does he know how to present?” Mordechai asked.
“Try him out,” Smirke suggested.

Summary
“So you enjoyed that, did you?”
“I wouldn’t go so far as to say enjoyed,” Jonah hugs his knees to his chest. His heart is still pounding—he can feel it in his chest and in his fingertips, in the vein Jonathan has told him runs thick and hot through each of his thighs. “But… the sensation… the…” he curls a hand into a fist, spreads it out again.
“The vertigo?” Giovanni suggests.
Jonah shakes his head. “No, that was uncomfortable. It’s the conception of it. The stealing of breath from the lungs, the loss of control.”
Giovanni leans forward, already picking up his sketchpad. “Less the sensation, more the power?”

Summary
From his jacket, Rayner pulled a scrap of black cloth. It was unremarkable, except for the fact that it was black only at first glance. On a second glance, it became clear that it was darker than black, sucking all light from around it.
Without fanfare, he wrapped it around Jonah’s face, tying it tightly.
“What can you see?” Maxwell asked, his voice low and dangerous.
“Nothing,” Jonah replied, but the sneer had gone from his voice.

Summary
Jonah kept half his awareness on Mordechai the rest of the time they sat together, waiting for his grip to tighten, but it didn’t.
Mordechai just held him, possessive and quiet. His hand was so massive that with his thumb on one side of Jonah’s neck, his fingers curled all the way around the other side. If he wanted to hurt Jonah, he would find it very easy.
But he didn’t.
