Without the first chapter's motive and conclusion prompting Shuichi's character arc, what would a blooming relationship between him and Kaede look like?

A sandbox, salmon-like AU. Kaede is just slightly meaner and bossier than in canon, with a slightly worse understanding of boundaries. Shuichi never goes through his character growth arc and remains kind of a wimpy, shy pushover.
They genuinely love each other but some aspects of their relationship are questionable.
