Steve turned the cup over in his hands. "What's your color, Buck?"
Bucky gave him an incredulous look. "What kind of stupid-ass question is that?" he demanded.
Steve just raised an eyebrow. "Color?"
"Green," Bucky snorted, "like it could be anything else when you haven't done anythi-- Ow!" Startled, he curled his metal hand protectively over his flesh arm, covering the spot Steve had just pinched. "What'd you do that for?"
Steve smiled thinly. "Because you're green and complaining about your orders," he said. "We made these rules, remember? If you have a real question, then ask. If my orders make you feel unhappy or unsafe, use a safeword. But if you're still green, then you're just bitching, and I will punish that however I see fit. Are we clear?"

"I could've helped," Bucky said again, helplessness spiraling toward anger. "Another pair of eyes on the scene, I could have--" He bit off his next words and crouched, grabbing at his hair with both hands. "He shouldn't be hurt."
Steve knelt next to him, put a hand on Bucky's shoulder. "I didn't know you two had gotten close," he said helplessly.
Bucky's whole body rippled in a shiver. "Not... close. Just. He's got no serum. No armor. No magic or-- Why should he go out there, risk everything like that, and I'm safe at home with all this?" He yanked at his hair -- the left hand pulled out a few strands -- and then looked down at his hands. "It should have been me."

"I reacted badly," Steve admitted as the climbed the steps to their apartment. "I'm sorry for that."
Bucky looked at Steve for a few steps, eyes narrow and measuring, as if he wasn't sure whether to believe Steve's remorse. "Yeah," he finally said. "Okay." He chewed on his lip and slowed somewhat as they rounded the landing, and said, quietly, "I was just playin'. Like, like we useta? Go out with a couple'a gals and I'd flirt with 'em just to work you up, 'member? Get you all hot an' bothered and jealous until you were 'bout ready t'take your belt to me right there in the dance hall." Bucky shivered in what Steve had to assume was remembered reaction.
"I remember," Steve said. "But it wasn't all play for me, even then, and a lot of stuff's happened to both of us since then. I don't want to ever hit you or hurt you out of anger or jealousy again, no matter how mad I get."

Bucky trudged homeward through the pink light of dawn, head down and hands hanging limp, like the other men coming off the night shift at the factory. His eyes burned from straining to see in the dim light and his legs ached from being on his feet for hours, but he had money in his pocket and he was heading home, so there really wasn't any reason for anything but smiling.
Hell, between the two jobs and Steve picking up that post over at the printer's, they were actually starting to get ahead a little bit. Another couple of months and they'd have that last big doctor's bill paid off, and then maybe Bucky could drop the factory job.
But for now, it was his day off. He had nowhere to go for the rest of the day, or tonight either, and didn't have to be at his other job until tomorrow morning at nine. And that meant... Anticipation shivered down Bucky's spine.

Steve shrugged uneasily. Bucky was the most important thing, and that was what mattered, wasn't it? But Bucky seemed to be trying to get Steve to admit that there were other things in his life. "I just left you for -- what was it? three days? four? -- to go fight another alien invasion," he pointed out. "You're not the only important thing."
Bucky snorted. "Oh, saving the world gets a mention, too; that's nice."
Frustration flooded him, hot and restless. "Well, what do you want me to say?" Steve demanded.
"I want you to say that you are important!" Bucky exploded, waving his hands, then visibly restrained himself, pulled himself in tighter and lowered his voice if not his intensity. "I want you to realize that you can't make me happy while you're sad, and that if you'd grow a pair and talk to me then we could probably both have what we want!"
