“i just think i was scared, maybe, about how much i felt for you. i loved you like a best friend, you know that, right? kie?” sarah’s voice dwindled down to a whisper as she said kiara’s name.
kiara nodded, her heart racing in her chest. she couldn’t decide if she wanted sarah to keep speaking to her or if she wanted to turn over and pretend to be asleep, like this conversation had never happened.
instead, she turned from where she’d been looking up at the dark navy sky filled with all it’s stars to look at the one that shined brightest, right next to her. sarah seemed to glow with kiara’s gaze. she reached out with one hand, the other still holding the blanket over herself and took the one that kiara had resting on her stomach, twining their fingers together.

sarah’s heart skipped a beat. she was sure her eyes were wider than they’d ever been as she looked at john b in shock. she swallowed drily, her hands shaking as she pushed back a piece of hair that had come out of her bun. she closed her eyes and took in a deep breath before she opened them again and locked them onto john b’s own.
