Given a normal, life-like setting, the subject always populated it with normal, life-like people. The people former Corporal Jake Jensen populated the club with had heads made of soccer balls. Pink ones.

Brandt drew in a ragged breath. His heart was pounding in his ears. “Benji,” he said, trying for sharp but instead he sounded hoarse, like his voice was stuck in his throat. “Time check.”

Summary
All of them knew what his plan meant, but Shikamaru hadn’t seen any other way. If he could have, Shikamaru would have only sacrificed himself, but there was no way he could hold off both of them. Shino was the only one of them that could fight Kisame with any aptitude, and Shikamaru was the only one smart enough to even begin to match Itachi.
As if it was any match at all; in skills, maybe, in strategy, definitely, in stamina and strength? Not a chance. Itachi’s chakra reserves were far greater than Shikamaru’s, and both knew it. Even as the Chunin did everything he could to compensate, did everything possible to make the fight about intelligence and not strength, Itachi wasn’t pulling any punches. The Uchiha knew he did not have the time to indulge in a fight. He was out to kill Shikamaru, and then Kiba before Naruto was warned, and then probably Team Kakashi when they got in his way.

Summary
Shikamaru sighed and tracked the path of a cloud. I should have known better. Of course that’s going to trick them.
“Are you just going to stand there?” Kakashi asked him eventually. Shikamaru shrugged.
“Why not? It’s not like you’re going to attack me or anything.”
“Oh?” He asked, sounding amused and genuinely curious at once. Shikamaru allowed a small smile and tried to decide if the cloud was a rabbit or a frog. Then the wind shifted and the image was gone.
“Mendoukusai. It’s not the point of the test.”
Or: Team 10 get assigned Hatake Kakashi as their Jounin-sensei. Shikamaru thinks the bell test is way too much work. Kakashi, meanwhile, questions his life choices.

It starts when eight o’clock goes by and Agent Coulson doesn’t show up at the Tower’s communal kitchen. Which is – unusual. Steve has to check the calendar to make sure he’s not mixing up his days, which, no, it is definitely Wednesday. Coulson is very prompt. He’s always at the Tower at eight in the morning on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
“JARVIS, has Agent Coulson checked in today?” Steve asked, wondering if maybe he just hadn’t wanted coffee from the kitchen this morning.
“Agent Coulson has not been in the building today, Captain,” the AI announced.
Or: Clint gets kidnapped, again, then saved by Coulson, as usual, but then he finds out his bad-ass ninja significant other apparently works with the Avengers, which, wow, way to cheat on that Captain America bet Phil.
