Most omegas in the Queendom don't want to enter the Race. They're often compelled to: as a service to their country, as a punishment for any number of crimes, or even just to honor the ritual celebrating the "miracle" of mating bonds. Most alphas, on the other hand, will clamor at the chance to chase after any of the omegas selected for the Race—hence, the annual lottery hopeful alphas can cast their name into for the chance to hunt any number of potential mates.
Omegas who are part of the royal family aren't typically forced to participate in the Race—their matings are much more valuable to be arranged for political gain—and yet when Prince Thorne is selected, he knows there's no backing out of it. He's fairly certain that no one knows about his secret relationship with Casimir, one of the knights in his mother's guard, but the whole thing reeks of someone trying to put an end to the scandal before it gets out.
