Summary
This is the first part of the three-part series, Rublev, detailing the life of Fyodor Ivanovich Rublev, an aspiring writer. It begins in 1838 when he is 19, and the final book ends with his death in 1889, at 70.
The first part of the series deals with his entrance into a secret artist's society after having written a successful play with the help of his closest friend, Rolan Vasilievich Kozlov. Much of the work deals with philosophical and artistic discourses between the primary characters, as well as the internal monologue of the titular character.
Rublev also seeks to explore themes of sexuality and understandings of gender within the backdrop of the early 19th century, as well as ideas of what makes a person a person, and what makes art, art.
