Summary
Liir keeps one door open for Candle, and one for Trism. Rain might've believed this foolishly optimistic but, really, Liir does it because he must. Because the alternative is to consign himself to loneliness for the rest of his life, and feckless Liir has never been that brave.
His past finally returns, beaten down by years as they've all been, and somehow realer because of it.
(Sometimes, the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true. The trouble then is deciding whether to wake up.)

Summary
The Land of Oz ends at the deadly desert, which is neither deadly nor deserted as long as you know what you're doing. Old news, which seems to be all poor feckless Liir Thropp-Tigelaar-Ko is good for, with his particular proclivity for things past.
Now, though, with his past manifesting as present in the form of disgraced dragonmaster Trism bon Cavalish, Liir is ready to pursue his future. Even if it means following Trism west across the barren wastes to the remote and mysterious Land of Ev on a combination diplomatic errand/suicide mission with nothing but the clothes on their backs and the yellow hen who has elected herself Liir's new familiar.
The future Liir has never dared to dream...a future with the man he has loathed and lost and loved time and time again...has never been closer. But the past isn't done with Liir yet and, in the vast, unexplored country at the edges of the so-called known world, he finds himself confronted by ghosts of a dead generation, haunted by memories of a life he never lived.
The desert is rife with dangers: marauding pirates, scheming politicians, and a dark power old as time...but there are wonders too, in this land beyond the rain, for the heart that can hold them.
