Summary
["...when unprotected Stalkers are exposed to Psi emissions for a sufficient period of time, they start "to lose their minds". This results from irreversible damage to the higher functions of the brain, eventually resulting in a Zombified Stalker"]
“Not everyone’s as lucky as our friend here was to have a crew appear just in time to pull them out when shit was about to go south,” For once, Verba’s tone didn’t have any underlying humor. It was oddly serious, and quite ominous, to put it bluntly. “You either make it out in time to just have a few screws knocked loose for a little bit, or you stay in the place for too long and your brain is pretty much scrambled for good. It’s where all the zombies over there come from - though they’re not really zombies. They’re still alive, just nothing but husks of men at this point. Something about the area fries your brain and that’s all that’s left of you.”
Yet, something inside Vadim told him there was more to it than that. He couldn't even remember how long he'd been up there for, and he couldn't shake the nagging feeling that something was wrong - with him - no matter how hard he tried to shove the worry out of his head.
He might've really fucked up this time.

Summary
Dimitri is well aware that his gullibility is a flaw that many would love to exploit - especially in a place like the Zone. "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me," Is essentially his motto; and he'd rather be damned than let anyone take advantage of him - usually after they already have at least once.
In other words, a rookie's closest friend is kidnapped by Bandits, and he's tricked into looking for a non-existent artifact to pay the ransom to free him.
It doesn't go as smoothly as he hoped it would.
