Summary
After the phylactery room incident, Amell is sent to Aeonar with the paramour of her best friend Jowan.
Lily and Amell must work together to survive and escape the brutality of the dreaded mage-prison, but years of torment can harden even the kindest hearts.
Outside, Jowan has not forgotten his love, nor the best friend he abandoned. Consumed with regret, a chance encounter leads to an unlikely partnership with a Dalish elf that sets Jowan on the trail to save his friends, while coming to terms with the wretched acts he committed in the name of love.
And across the Waking Sea, within the bustling, gilded streets of Kirkwall, a lonely Knight-Captain is haunted by his greatest regret.
This is a tale of new and broken friendships through the years, culminating to a bloody conclusion within the haunted stone halls of Castle Cousland.

Summary
Two years before the explosion at the Temple of Sacred Ashes, Cullen is Knight-Captain of Kirkwall, and after many long years still loves a mage that should be long dead. Tormented and disturbed, Cullen is an unwell man filled with regret. Growing disillusioned with the Templar Order, he finds himself confused but called to a higher purpose. The Inquisition is where he will find his atonement, and possibly more... but only if he can overcome the darkness lurking within his heart.
Amell finds herself lost, flitting through life, grasping onto drifting bits of freedom to keep herself afloat. She is emotionally stunted, romantic, and a fool. No matter how badly she wishes it were not true. She cannot escape the stupidity of her actions, with one decision bleeding into the next to increasingly terrible consequences that culminate into a loss so terrible it almost kills her. She is no hero or savior meant to change the world. She's just a mage searching for the freedom so many in Thedas take for granted, unless fate decides she may have a small part to play after all.
