Summary
At fifteen, Kazutora looks at the world as if it is a game of chess. The King is at the top, the most powerful piece on the board, followed by its loyal Queen, its Knights and Bishops and Castles, and finally, its Pawns. The expendable pieces, the ones that are always moved and captured first.
At fifteen, Kazutora knows his place in the world. He is certain that he is a Pawn, to be used and discarded at whim. He is certain that there is no room on the board for him.
At twenty-five, Kazutora learns that he has been playing by the wrong rules, and that he really never knew how chess worked.

Summary
Chifuyu’s ‘gay awakening’, as the kids call it these days, came when he was twelve years old. He was beaten and bruised, every part of his body aching and screaming for him to just stop fighting already, and this otherworldly being - Baji Keisuke, as he came to know in the moments after - had descended from the heavens, whipped off his ridiculous rectangular glasses and torn the elastic from his hair, and proceeded to beat the shit out of the entire group without breaking a sweat.
Chifuyu’s second gay awakening comes in the form of Hanemiya Kazutora, just over a decade later - shirtless, hair pooling around his shoulders, with a rounded pair of glasses perched on the end of his nose.
(or: the mortifying ordeal of finding out your boyfriend is somehow even more attractive in glasses.)

For a moment, he feels twelve years old again. There’s a gentle, cooling breeze wafting under the fabric of his shirt, blowing through the thick strands of his hair and making his eyes water a little bit, even behind his glasses. Mikey’s right there next to him, sipping a can of melon soda, ankles crossed as they sit on the steps by the river bank.
Then Mikey turns and speaks, and Kazutora’s heart finds its home in his throat instead of his chest.

“Kazutora.” Chifuyu’s voice is edged with steel, stern and scolding. Kazutora swallows. “You are driving me up the fucking wall.”
“Through the wall, actually,” he replies, before his brain can catch up to his mouth. Chifuyu turns to glare at him. The passenger-side airbag chooses that precise moment to blow up in his face.
