Summary
Later, they do have sex - Xie Lian starts to heal, and starts to want that with Hua Cheng - but until he communicates that very (very very) clearly, Hua Cheng's interactions with him are completely nonsexual, even when he's out of his mind with rut.
He still has alpha instincts of "must claim mate" and "must defend mate" - but "must make sure mate is happy and feels safe" is the strongest of all.

Xie Lian nods, anxiety fading. He leans forward, brushing a gentle kiss over his husband's lips, before focusing on the skin before him.

Xie Lian doesn’t often wake up, when they do this. He learned to wake up in an instant at any hint of danger during the centuries he spent wandering - but now, with Hua Cheng, he feels safe enough to sleep deeply even through this.
Hua Cheng clutches him close. His hips stutter.
His husband feels safe, safe enough to let him do this. Safe enough to ask for it, stammering out a request with pink cheeks and evasive eyes - “San Lang, I want to wake up sore.”
