  Summary

  Penelope Grigio's life was restricted to following the path carved for her, get the best grades she could muster, go to law school, marriage and children and eventually rotting away in death, killing her darlings one birthday at a time.
  One year after her grandfather’s death, Penelope finds with the dreadful prospect of spending her entire break by herself in the old men’s house. Nevermind the old floorboards, the mysterious trees in the gardens and the library she was never allowed in as a child, much less what she finds out there.
