She felt the edges of life bruising her like a mashed apple, making the truth seem vague and relative. And during those times, she would catch a glimpse of his smile, and it set her mind wandering.
During those times, she wondered... just exactly how good of a fuck would that be, anyway?

Scanlan was quiet for a moment. "Am I really that bad?"
"Scanlan, this morning you panicked because you thought I had left."
"No I didn't."
Pike shook her head. "This conversation is going to go nowhere if you lie to me."
He was silent for a moment. "Can you really blame me?" he said, bitterly.
