Summary
People thought Eli was harmless; they thought he couldn't stand up for himself and that he was weak. They thought that he was dumb and didn't notice the way everyone looked down on him. They didn't realize that's what he wanted them to think. He wanted to blend in as best he could in order to fulfill his mission as a changeling.
Or Eli is hiding something and Steve wants to know what it is and gets into a lot of trouble for his curiosity.

Claire grabbed at Steve's arm. "Please just stay here for with me for ten seconds!" Claire could feel tears welling up in her eyes Steve had promised he would hang out with her and as usual he had to leave for Eli. Something akin to guilt flashed behind Steve's eyes. "I am so sorry but this is important."
Claire let go of Steve and clenched her fists. "it is always important when it comes to Eli and Jim isn't it?" Steve scowled. "Yeah they are more important than you so sorry I had to clarify that." It was meant to be sarcastic but there was some truth to his words and Claire sensed it.
Steve seemed to instantly regret his choice of words but before he could even try to take them back Claire spoke.
"Sorry that I had thought you changed I guess I was wrong." Steve opened his mouth to respond or maybe just cry but his phone rang again and he left running out of the door in a hurry.
Claire had a feeling this would be the last time he even showed up to hang out with her

Summary
Contrary to popular belief, Steve was not empty-headed or dim. He just has a different thought process than most people. He has difficulties pronouncing or knowing the definition of certain words because he simply does not think in words.
His thought process is composed of colors, feelings, taste, and images. He did not require words to string things together.
Therefore, he had a hard time learning to do so for the benefit of other people. He eventually decided the best way to fit in was to stand out like a sore thumb
