Yeonjun didn't want a hybrid, he didn't want a pet in general. He was afraid of responsibility and afraid of making mistakes. He wanted all living beings to be comfortable and not dependent on anyone, especially not on him.
... And yes, maybe Soobin is very independent, especially in formulating his needs and get them met by his owner.

---Yeonjun quickly realized that he had to use whatever he could get his hands on. Determinism had made him a Cow-shifter, even in his human form he could lactate without having to be pregnant first—although he was subject to hormonal fluctuations that affected when he lactated. Determinism had chosen sexual arousal, for example. Dog-Hybrid Soobin and Cat-Hybrid Yeonjun - as puppy and kitten they live in the same pet shop, but get separated due to different adopters. After growing up separately, they find each other again out of the blue. Still being the best friends, basically soulmates, they run away and try their independent life as hybrids - which is not so easy, but luckily, an old lady let them work in her flower shop and live in the little apartment above the shop. After a while the birth control meds, usually given by their vets, are broken down in their bodies' systems, which causes their very first heat and rut...Series
