Summary
Dreuer looked up, and found Gale’s hardened gaze staring intently back at him. For all his soft edges, the man had a rare ability to strip Dreuer to his bones and stare at his very core, to coax honesty from him when he knew damn well he would never have been honest before.
“I needed to see if I still could, but not near anyone I might hurt if it went wrong.” He grunted, slowly lowering his raised hand. Gale’s touch became gentler, the soft cushion of his palm encircled Dreuer’s thumb and he felt the soft and steady stroke of his fingertips over his knuckles.
“You’ve hurt yourself badly here, I’d say that's a rather efficient way to determine that this did, in fact, go very wrong. What were you thinking?”
“I had the capacity to do great things, and now I-“
“Dreuer.”
“What am I, if I have nothing left but you?”

Summary
As much as Dreuer longed to say that every waking moment of his new domestic life was as peaceful and romantic as he could have imagined, the tedium was growing more oppressive by the day. He made himself tea, packed his pipe and found a book on portals, but that became rather uninteresting after half an hour or so. He tidied the pantry, picking at anything in Gale’s kitchen inventory that looked particularly delicious or worthy of stealing without any need for preparation. He considered playing his violin but even that had lost its appeal. He lit a second pipe and rifled through Gale’s clothes for nothing in particular, and failed to find it. Eventually, Dreuer resigned himself to lying on his back in front of the fire and watching the flames. This is where Gale found him at midday.

Summary
Gale watched him in silence for a moment. It was a strange feeling. Gale and silence were not frequent bedfellows, and the lack of a friendly or well informed reply felt distinctly abnormal.
“… say something, would you? This feels very unnatural.” Dreuer huffed.
“I’m sorry.” Gale laughed, and gave the hand clasped in his own a squeeze. “I just… I think that’s rather beautiful.”
“Not too foolish an idea?”
“If anyone is foolish enough to do it, I would assume that it would be you.”
