Summary
As much as Dreuer longed to say that every waking moment of his new domestic life was as peaceful and romantic as he could have imagined, the tedium was growing more oppressive by the day. He made himself tea, packed his pipe and found a book on portals, but that became rather uninteresting after half an hour or so. He tidied the pantry, picking at anything in Gale’s kitchen inventory that looked particularly delicious or worthy of stealing without any need for preparation. He considered playing his violin but even that had lost its appeal. He lit a second pipe and rifled through Gale’s clothes for nothing in particular, and failed to find it. Eventually, Dreuer resigned himself to lying on his back in front of the fire and watching the flames. This is where Gale found him at midday.
