“D’you ever wonder,” Eddie slurs into his ear, “what would have happened if I didn’t leave?”
They’ve been talking for over an hour when Eddie drops the bomb, and even then, Richie doesn’t see it for what it is.
“Whaddya mean?” Richie rolls over onto his side, holding back a yawn. Eddie inhales deeply.
“If we’d stayed in Derry,” Eddie clarifies. “Or maybe.” He pauses, clearing his throat. “Or if we’d left together, I don’t know.”
