“Stede’ll be better off without me anyway,” he says. “I need—I need to figure out who the fuck I am.”
“Yeah,” Izzy agrees, in the same soft tone, and Ed’s skin crawls. He looks back over at Izzy. That easy? Ed shoots his leg off for mentioning Stede, and now he’s letting Ed just run away from him like that?
“Will you stay with him, then?”
Izzy swallows and looks away. “Probably, yeah. Got a bit used to the life of a first mate. Think it suits me. And the crew still need their arses kicked a bit, so.” He looks down at the deck, shifts his golden prosthesis.
Ed sort of feels like he can’t leave, not with so much left unsorted between them. But how can he ever make up for this? How can it ever be the same between them?
He should go talk to Stede. There’s no sense in putting it off any time at all. But, he doesn’t want to leave Izzy’s side.
Izzy pats him on the shoulder. “Just do what feels right, Ed. I think you’ve been looking for a fresh start for a while now.” He turns and starts off.
“Wait, Izzy,” Ed calls, standing. “You got a minute? To talk?”

“Hm,” Ed says, a frown in his tone.
“What?” Izzy asks, holding his breath as Ed trails his finger over one of the raised scars. They’re ugly, gnarled, pink, and huge. Ed’s disgusted, surely. Ed’s managed to somehow avoid a lashing severe enough to even draw blood, let alone leave marks like these.
“Don’t like these,” Ed murmurs, almost casually and Izzy’s heart sinks. “Don’t like the thought of another man marking you up.” At those words, though, Izzy shivers. Oh.
Ed presses his fingernail against the scar. It aches. “You’re mine,” he mumbles. “My first mate. Right?”
