With all the writhing in pain he had done, his wrists were actually feeling loose in their rope restraints. He could slip right out of them. Then, he could untie his legs and be free at last. The first mate had even left the cell door open after his last session, so confident that Riz wasn’t going anywhere. But even if he could get out, he’d be stuck on an enemy combatant’s ship with no escape. Better to wait, for now.
What was he waiting for again?
He knew he had to wait for something. Or someone? So he can do it. He can wait.

Riz can hear Fabian pacing across their quarters behind him. Riz knows he’s being a little petulant but he doesn’t want to commit to an afternoon being stuck with Monty. He won’t do it.
“Then I won’t put him in the party,” Fabian says. “We’ll tell the crew that it’s a short scouting mission, and just you and I will head out to the castle. Okay? No Monty." Fabian stops his pacing behind Riz and puts a hand on his shoulder. "I’m not going out there without you, alright? Captain Seacaster and The Ball, remember?”

Riz swallows thickly. He feels sick. “No,” he says, uselessly. “No, it’s fine.” He thinks about how he feels when he casts a spell: powerful, unstoppable, alive. It’s worth it, he thinks. The symptoms are worth it as long as he gets to keep casting. “It’s fine, Fabian. I feel great. I feel incredible.”
