Summary
“You have the same daemon as Bucky,” a boy with a freckled face marveled. His own daemon, a monkey, was sitting on his shoulder, clinging to his ginger hair. “That’s so cool.”
The soldier turned to face the boy, silent, and something about his face made the kid back away, rejoining his family, glancing back at him nervously. The soldier was not surprised. He looked at the hyena. To the soldier, his daemon looked nightmarish. Ugly. His sharp needle teeth were exposed, dangerous jaws parted in readiness to bite.
Your daemon's so ugly, Barnes. So damn ugly. Hyenas are cowards. They're scavengers. They're thieves.

“What would it take?” she asked softly, behind him. “To bring him out?”
James shook his head, the words trapped within him: Don’t. Please don’t.
“Ты нужен мне,” she whispered. I need you.

Summary
“Make this stop,” Bucky said, holding out the metal arm.
There was a tense sudden silence, the kind that happened when the soldier did something wrong.
“You’re voluntarily asking me to disable your arm?” Stark asked, slowly.
Bucky nodded, wary. Stark looked like he was trying to look into his mind, to figure out how it worked. Bucky wanted to tell him it was a scum-ridden dark lake and sometimes torture and death and poetry rose out of the murky waters.

Summary
Bruce took them up to the building’s rooftop, led him to standing at the edge, where the city spread out beneath them in all directions, where people were specks moving across the grid of grey, and cars were child’s toys. Bucky looked down from on high on these small, busy people with their small, busy affairs, that seemed so all consuming for each individual, so inconsequential from up here. He filled his lungs with the cold air of being outside for the first time in many days and thought of falling. Lobo prowled along the edge, his fur ruffled by the wind, dark rounded ears flickering. Don’t fall, he warned Bucky, with dark humor. Not again.
“Did you bring me here to tempt me?” Bucky asked.

Summary
He drifted into soft darkness and there were no nightmares, for once, until he felt something brush over his body and touch his cheek. The soldier lashed out in panic, grappling for a firm grip on something he could break, snap, end. He rolled, came up straddling a struggling body, catching flailing arms.
There were dark wide eyes looking at him in terror, his human hand gripping two human fragile wrists and pinning them down, the bionic hand pressing against the target’s gasping mouth so it could not bite, though it tried anyway, teeth grinding on his metal fingers. There was a drumming sound, the sound of tiny hooves beating a staccato rhythm.

Summary
Steve was his only link to what had been, holder of the stories connecting yesterday and today. Steve had offered his unconditional friendship long ago, allowed Bucky to learn to see the beauty in the creature that was the reflection of his soul. Steve was his harbor in the storm, his bridge back to sanity. And now he was looking at Bucky, asking him mutely for reassurance, because he had become used to being relied upon, being the one others looked to for guidance. And Bucky wanted to give him more than reassurance.
Before he could lose his nerve, he leaned forward and tentatively touched his lips to Steve’s. He didn’t know what he had expected. For everything to make sense immediately, perhaps, for the realization to break that they had done this before, many times. That was not what happened.

Summary
“Buck?” Steve said, and the question was both wary and concerned - even now, even after this. Arden flapped down to settle on Lobo’s back, and that calmed him from bristling and stalking to an uneasy stillness, scenting the air, ears alert. We should run, Lobo told him. Leave. Now.
“I promised I wouldn’t run,” Bucky said to the daemon, to Steve, voice raw, not hiding anything.
Steve’s grip tightened. “Are you breaking your promise?”
“No,” Bucky said. “I won’t run. But you should tell me to go.”

Summary
The next morning, the sun shone into a nondescript room far away from anywhere familiar, shone upon two men who were not heroes or villains, who had laid aside their weapons and their defenses, whose love had survived centuries.
This time was what they had to regain what they could have had in the past. Bucky would fight to make sure every morning would affirm their bond, affirm what did not need to be spoken. He would fight to hold them together, despite all that he knew would work to pull them apart. The wars still to be fought, and the dangers yet to be vanquished.
